I am in the process of building another custom 223 with a 7" twist. Wondering what your OAL is for your loaded Berger 90gr. VLD's rounds?

I am trying to find an optimal length for effective case capacity so I can build a dummy round for the smith to set the throat length. Also, thinking of using 80gr. Amax if the 90's dont perform amazingly well. I dont care about mag length as I will be single feeding.

I am all ears.

Where the boatail meets the bearing surface of bullet (bullet diameter) seat bullet in new case to where shoulder and neck oc case meet so all thats below bottom of neck is tapperd boat tail
you will be able to shoot 80gr and 90gr Bergers kissing the lands

Will do that tonight and see what it gives me. Would you care to share your OAL?

I am a little ahead of you on the learning curve. I have a custom .223 built on the Stevens action with a Shillen 7" twist. I tried all my tricks but could not get the 90's to settle in at 300 yards. I moved to the 80 grain Sierras and have achieved consistent 1 1/2" accuracy at 300. (1953 FPS) This allows me to compete in F Class but I am giving up BC which results in harder times when the wind blows. I would love to shoot the 90's but just can't tolerate 4" groups. I will be interested to see if a formula emerges from this discussion of the use of 90's. Meanwhile, I have 5 boxes of 90 grain Bergers for sale if you are interested.

cheers and good luck with your loading.

2.48 with 80 Amax. Opinion out there seems to be that the extra speed gained with the 80 gr outperforms, our equals performance with less cost than, the higher bc 90 gr due to the 223 case being a little small to give the 90s ' enough' velocity.
