Hi Guys,

I'm using 100grain Thunderhead tips. (Fixed - 3 blade)

Wondering about mechanical tips? I've heard stories of failure opening, which is why I've been skeptical.

Any stories, recommendations?

Info always appreciated.
Cheers!

I had 2 failures with Splitfires. In one the broadhead seperated from the shaft on impact, the threaded part broke at the base of the broadhead. And I blame the broadhead on a 30 yard standing broadside hit, I couldn't have placed any better if I could have walked it up to him. ( He went about a mile, found him in the spring ).

Got Thunderheads ( 125 grain ) on now and am thinking of trying the Montec G5's I bought last year. But I may just stick with the Thunderheads.

Not very scientific, but thats what happened to me.

Stick with fixed blade head!
Most if not all shots while hunting with archry equipment are within 20 yards, flight of the heads is completly controlled and consistant with a good quality fixed blade head. I've hunted with ThunderHeads for 20 years.
With faster arrow flight from new bows, mechanical heads start to have even more issues with opening in flight or not opening on impact.

Why take the chance, I have to much repect for the animals I hunt.

Wait for the right shot on the animal, were you can put the arrow through the lungs for a quick clean kill. Even the best heads from any manufacturer won't help with a bad hit.

Montecs are awesome! Don't doubt them for a minute, however, if you're bow is not tuned properly you will have some headaches. I used them with success this year.

My friend uses spitfires and had no problems what so ever with his buck this year. Huge entry hole and made the heart look like it had been dropped in a blender. When he first bought them, he was skeptical because they looked so flimsy. We figured a blade would brake off it they hit a rib, but they didn't.

Why take the chance, I have to much repect for the animals I hunt.

Spoken like a true fudd.

Had someone not had the balls to stick blackpowder down a tube with a ball infront of it, we wouldn't have firearms.

If someone didn't have the hair brained idea to try and put blackpowder and the ball in a brass container for faster reloading, we could have rifles.

If wildcatters had not taken a chance, would we have some of the great bullets we have today like the .270?

Had projectile developers not taken a chance we would still be using nothing but cast bullets instead of something as advanced as the TTSX. (nothing wrong with cast though)

I have a lot of respect for the animals that I hunt, that's why I keep and open mind to new technology. If it can make me a more efficient hunter, great. Do I drink the koolaide every time something new comes out? Absolutely not. I research it and see if it benefits my current situation.

Trial and error are what makes us a civilization. If you don't try something new, how do you know if it's going to work? Simply saying this is the best that it's every going to be is absurd.

Check out Slick Trick broadheads. One on the very best no frills, all business broadheads available for either X-bow, or compound.

Had Spitfires. Two failures. One broke it's blade, the second arrow failed to penetrate deeply enough. Stopped hunting and did my own research instead of listening to others.
In a nutshell my bow has to be fast enough to utilize these. The average bow/arrow setup loses 30-40% in penetration. The only way to compenasate is with a fast bow/carbon arrows.
I decided this was not for me & gave away the Spitfires, bought 125 grain, three blade Muzzy's for the compound and had full pass through @25 yards broadside whitetail. Deer found dead 40 yards later after a 20 minute pause. A blind man could have followed the extensive blood trail via smell alone.

I know others have had success, but myself, I will never again use/buy mechanicals.

Well gentlemen, thanks for the "tips"!!

(See what I did there?!) :D

I might just stick with my Thunderheads for now.

My bow is a PSE Primos STL. I think it's IBO speed rating is 304fps. However, I have it tuned to around 50lbs, so it won't be quite that fast.
I'm using Easton Gamegetter II 2116 Alum. arrows, but am probably going to pick up some carbons soon.

I've been out 3 times this year to my stand and I'm seeing action everytime!
Big bucks!!
