Question, if I were to remove the botom meta from my Remington 700 and take off the barrell and trigger assembly from the stock should there be washers both on top of the screws and the bottom or none at all?
I have seen both lately and not sure what is correct?

lots of 700's have washers under one or both action screws...these are to make up for dimensional differences in the stocks...you see them mostly on wood stocks...the Tupperware stocks must be held to tighter tolerances....the washers are under the trigger-guard/floorplate unit to make sure the mag box has a bit ot float and is not jammed between the bottom metal and the receiver....

That is exactly where the washers were on the action screws both top and bottom and it was on a 700 mountain laminate stock. I removed them and tightened the action screws becasuse it seemed the bottom meta did not fit snug to the stock with the washers, when the washers are removed it is a cleaner fit. Do you recomend I put them back in?

you only need the washers if the mag box is unable to move between the receiver and the bottom metal..if the mag box is not squeezed between the bottom metal and the receiver I guess you don't need them....I like my 700 mag boxes to have a bit of vertical movement....about .020" seems about right...
