I recently had the oportunity to fire a friend's Sig 229, and I must say that I really liked it (this will cost me:D).
Now I know that these are 12.6, which I (currently) am not. I also know from firing another friend's 226 that my smaller hands do not like the larger grip and reach for the trigger on that gun at all. So here's the questions:

- are any of the other (restricted) Sigs equipped with grips the same size as the 229; and/or
- are 229's available with a slightly longer barrel to put them into the restricted classification. If so, what kind of costs are we looking at?

Thanks in advance for any insight guys.

If you get a P220, the grip will be narrower. There are 9mm versions both in the older style as well as new(though rare and mostly for European markets). The north american standard would be in 45acp.

There was a P229 Sport that would been restricted class. Not sure if you like that, but it was a bull barrel, with weight version of the 229.

We brought a dozen or so police demo guns in. They had 112mm threaded barrels. So there are some out there.
I have a P228 and P229 and the grip is the same circumference as a P226. The contour is a little different though. You may just want to try a short trigger on a P226 instead of trying to pry a P229 out of someone's hands.

Yeah short trigger...forgot about that...

I had heard about P229s with threaded barrels, but never seen one available...

The P228 and P229 have a better grip than the P226 IMO. More ergonomic. The current P226s have a newer grip plate design that was designed by SIG Arms in the US which is supposed to mimick the P228 and P229 design, but I've never thought it was as good. Trigger reach is also a bit easier on the P228 and P229.

They do make a shorter trigger (it's basically thinner), but I've always thought they suck ass, because the edge of the frame gets in the way. However that might just be my fingers, if I were you I'd be sure to try before I buy.

I've never really seen the point to the .40 and .357 P226, because the only advantage they have over the P229 is that they're a bit thinner. Magazine capacity is the same, although in Canada it's ten rounds whatever you have.

Given the choice I'd take a P229 over a P226, but frankly it's a marginal difference and in Canada you don't have the choice unless you want to cause yourself a lot of hassle getting a longer barrel separately for a P229.
