question of the day: Should you aim and shoot with one eye closed or both eyes open

hello everyone!

the question of the day today is about aiming,

so when your aiming should you close one eye and focus with the other and hit your target?
or keep both eyes open and aim in your sights?

now ive had people tell me both,
lets see if we can get some answers here,

^Ditto that. One might get away with short term use closing one eye, but sooner or later muscle fatique will set in.

Better both eyes open. SOme match shooters use eye patches or special shooting glasses with the un-used eye lens covered in black paint or opague plastic blocking device.

In all seriousness I'm a ambidextrous cross-eye dominant shooter with all sorts of problems, basically when I aim with a rifle with my right eye I keep both eyes open, but when I aim with my left I close my right eye, unless I'm shooting handguns, then it's reversed (confusing I know) I say keep both eyes open
 
some people close both eyes just before the shot ;)

I say keep both open. if you can't - practice at home till you make it :)
 
If you can do it both eyes open is better because you can see more of your surroundings. Being able to do will largely depend on what sights you are using. In my experience scopes and iron sights are difficult to use with both eyes open, you get a weird double vision thing. Peep sights are ok and those fancy red dot ones are easy by comparison.

I don't see a problem with closing one eye. Most people have been doing it for over 100 years. It must be successful

As for both eyes closed...well you are a dumbass
 
Closing one eye for the sake of aiming shooting peacefully safely at the range I totally don't see an issue at all. Just not for competitions like IPSC or in real life defense situation which thank God we never have to worry about this here in Canada and only apply to our neighbors in the South...

Have that said, I certainly hope all our Canadian police are taught to shoot with both eyes open...
 
I'm left eye dominant but right handed. I shoot with both eyes open but make sure the pistol is aligned to my left eye... I'm not sure if that's what I should be doing ideally, but seems to work.
 
I shoot with one eye open. I have been doing IPSC this way for a year now. If I keep both eyes open, I have no way of lining up my signs as my point of focus swicthes which sounds weird. People put tape on their glasses to combat this to make it bluury for one of their eyes.

Sounds like you are cross eye dominant if your focus shifts.
Start with both eyes open and if you loose the sight picture just blink your non-dominant eye and your dominant one will lock onto the sight and away you go. It takes some practice but eventually your eyes do it automatically.
 
Close one eye so you can focus on your target better. If your gun blows up in your face then you'll have protected one of your eyes too.

To the OP, to sum up:
Yes, shoot with one eye open
- or -
Yes shoot with both eyes open
- or -
If you are cross dominant, keep the dominant eye open...other eye, doesn't matter.

Conclusively however, do not shoot with both eyes closed! That would probably not be successful.
 
I close one but mostly because I'm cross eye dominate. If it's a scoped rifle I don't bother to close an eye most of the time.
 
I am profoundly lefthanded but right eye dominant. I have tried both aligning the sights with my right eye and taping over the right lenses on my shooting glasses while keeping my right eye open. Neither solution seemed to work very well and I find my results are better with just closing my right eye.
