Question on 16X

Had one - I prefer the SS10x, even for long range (300+ yrds) gophers. The SS16x was OK, but it has a significantly narrower field of view. The 16x is also not as bright as the 10x.

16x would be ok for beyond 100 yards....but if something pop's up at 25 - 50 yards in front of you 16x would be pretty harsh to use would it not? there is nothing more frustrating then missing a gopher at a close range.

Mine's fine as it has side focus, I generally have no problem sighting onto my target, just look at the target, bring the rifle on target by feel and drop my head behind the scope, your eye never really leaves the target. But an AO would be a pain to twist around to the right setting for close up regardless of scope power. I shoot gophers with everything from irons to 24X, and all work, with 16X being a nice compromise.

I've just installed a Super Sniper 16 X on my wife's StealthII. She loves it. Sure it's got a narrow field of view, but she can live with that. We'll be using our Sniper rigs from 50m to 800m.

She says that she really would love a Mark 4 Leupold, but this SS 16X is pretty close.... that's encouraging to hear.

Keep us posted with what you find....

My .25-06 200m bench-rest rig wears a 16X Leupold, I find it ideal for that kind of paper punching, and it's good for gophers that are "a little ways out there".

Thanks guys. I will keep looking - I think I am being too fussy - you know the "I want everything but dont want to pay anything" syndrome. :D

Hungry - I would sell some vital organs to hear my wife say "Hunny, I think I want a Leupold MK4 for my sniper rig". Thats awesome!!! :D :D :D

Weaver makes a fixed 15x scope, the KT15. At least if that doesn't work out for you, it won't be so hard on the wallet.

I do gopher hunting with a 6-18, and the vast majority of shots are shot at 6x. The only time I dial it in is when I acquire multiple targets in a dog town at long range
