Question on beginner precision rifle - in 223

True, but you need the twist for those bullets. A fast twist 223 is a very useful rifle though. - dan

For sure. All of my barrels have been 1:7 or 7.5. They also aren't factory barrels so I guess not super germane to the OP. Would be nice to see some of the big companies offering a fast twist barrel on a .223 though.

*cough* Savage 110 Elite Precision .223 is 7" twist *cough*

Yeah, I guess they are. I don't have any experience with Savage centrefire rifles but every time I think to myself "I should buy one just to play around with so I can have an opinion" I remember that A: I already have more bolt guns than I need (and twice as many barrels as I do actions) and they're all nicer than a Savage; B: the 2 nice dudes in front of my team at the Karstetter Memorial team field match down in Wa a few years back who both had to take turns pulling each other's brass out of their Savages (on the clock) cause the ejectors on both guns failed and C: when I decide I don't like the action I'm stuck selling a chassis that is only compatible with a Savage...

I'm hoping for Remington, Tikka, Bergara, I dunno who else, to make a fast twist .223 as it would be a great entry-level precision rig for new shooters.

Remington sold some 1-9 twist rifles in 223 at one point. Nothing quicker though, to my knowledge. - dan

I had my Savage 110 Elite Precision 26" running 80gr ELDm with range pickup brass and varget doing 2953 fps.

So I'm going to answer Maybe to the question.

^^^ Same. Also use r15 and 80 SMK to get 2900ish and it also closely mimics a 175 smk 308 trajectory to 600yds. 26" barrel with a Wylde chamber.

Any idea if id be able to hit 2900 FPS safely with 75 eldms out of a 24” barrel? Without hard bolt lift or any of those signs?

Probably not, I'm getting about 2800, I say about because I haven't actually run them over a Crony, just adjusted my muzzle velocity to reflect actual 300m drop on my ballistic calculator, but I'm in that neighborhood. 2900, might be a hair too much, but you might be able to get there, depends on your throat, and powder. I'd suggest very unlikely with Varget, you'd have a better chance using CFE223/W748/BL-C2. I actually have to use CCI 41's as I punch the odd hole in the primers using CCI 400/450's, it's obviously related to my firing pin hole on the bolt face as it's a bit over sized, regardless the load is about as hot as I'm comfortable making it.

I've talked about throat length before, but that's what will make the difference for you Mike.

It would be helpful to know what the over all length of a loaded round is for you.

I can hit 2,900 FPS with 90s in a 26 inch barrel, but my loaded rounds are almost 2.700" long. Of course the barrel has a throat that allows that.

So with that in mind, it is certainly possible for you to hit 2900 as well with 75s given the cartridge capacity, but it will depend entirely on your throat. That brings us to the mags you are using and if the longest round you can fit in the mag will be your constraint. Again, I've mentioned in the past how to mod AI pattern mags to increase case capacity.

You can drop pressures a little by using fire formed brass with just the slightest perceptible shoulder bump as well. A full FL resized case will show pressure signs before a case that has been fire formed and only neck resized. This alone is good for 50 FPS or maybe more.

It would be in a 223 Wylde chamber. I also like fireformed and only neck sized brass instead of doing full length sizing. I like the wylde chamber cuz with factory ammo your still good to go but to hit 2900 FPS with 88 eldm would be some sweet performance in a 223!

I HAVE the savage axis .223 precision it has 1-7 twist and likes 88gr ELDm and cfe223 want to try some vitavouri N140 but havn't found any yet Just don't put a
bore scope down your savage and you'll be fine LOL once you do you'll wonder how it shoots so dam good. They are button rifled barrels that have chatter marks from one end to the other
I also have 2 110"s they are the same one in 6creedmoor and one in 6.5 they all shoot 1/2 moa or better great way to get into long range shooting cheap and shoot the heck out of it
can always change the barrel out later. But on that not I have a BA in >338 Lapua that has no chatter marks but was allot more money

I'd also like to get into some longer range shooting but unfortunately my range is indoor 50 yards, and the range I'm waiting on 1 hour drive away is only up to 200 yards. Now I did impulse buy a 223 savage 110 elite precision barreled action second hand and stuck it into a Oryx chassis, just because I like the looks of it better than the more expensive chassises. But don't think I'll even shoot it for a long time, due to not having access to a longer range and would feel silly bringing that big rifle into my 50 yard range lol

Yeah, the SPS Tactical came with a 1:9 twist but a pretty stumpy 20" barrel. I like mine, it doesn't get too velocity but the barrel does seem to stabilize the Hornady 75gr BTHP as well as it does the 69gr Matchking which is nice to see.

I'm planning to spin a 26", 1:7 twist .223 AI for next spring though. Should stretch it out further and handle the 80grs+ bullets as well.
