I heard the Mounties are making the Dlask shorties restricted and talk of them actually being prohibited.

Is this true? Anything shorter than 18.5" is illegal, right?

seem to be tons of rumors...

the only confirmed info I had -from Dlask's postings - was that the ones with a run of "SMD-12" marked receivers were deemed restricted, but the Remington marked ones were non-restricted. I understand he swapped the SMD marked receivers for Remington marked ones to those who wished .

These is a rather large thread on the Shotgun forum on this topic.

There seems to be a lot of disinformation on these being spread by people with agendas - some with 4 letter names that start with F and end with d

You cannot 'saw off' an existing barrel. A manufacturer must make the barrel that short to begin with (examples above mentioned of 14 inch shotguns which we all know are unrestricted).

The second 'law' here refers to the stock. You cannot have a shotgun that short if the stock is a folder or telescoping stock. But a pistol grip is fine.

The law may change to make it restricted, but at that point all you'd have to do is put a stock on it to keep it unrestricted.

True, but we don't want to have to do that. I am assuming you're referring to putting on another stock to make the OAL greater? Not in the cards, in my opinion.

And last I heard, the reason why they wanted to make it restricted was they were trying to argue it was a pistol...which is absolute rubbish because you need to hands to pump the damn thing anyways.

I agree - and dlask is going to court to deal with it as i understand it.

Well - i think that some of the cops involved don't like it period :) and are trying to figure a way to make it 'go away'. Others are sympathetic to what it's designed for and are trying to protect it.

And the argument that you need two hands is actually mine - not an 'official' one. I argued earlier that the distinction between a pistol and a 'rifle' or 'long gun' is that a pistol, once loaded and armed, can be aimed and fired one handed until empty. This cannot - it requires two hand operation.

Sure you can...just make sure you keep it over 18"

Well true. I thought it was implicitly implied that i was referring to the 'below 18' comment, seeing as I was addressing the points made previously. :) sorry - didnt' mean to confuse you.
Did you just wake up from a coma ?

Colt .. you know better than to be like that.

Alot of shotguns with barrels shorter than 18.5'' are non restricted. What matters is overall length

Well - in the interests of being technically accurate (seeing as colt caught me out once already), it DOES matter with semi-auto shotguns.

All semi-auto firearms in canada except rimfire do have a barrel restriction. All OTHER actions (lever, single, bolt, pump etc) don't have a minimum barrel length (other than the 4 inch pistol limit).

Seeing as most shotties are pumps, they don't qualify.

Well this has been fun. I can't BELIEVE I got a Dlask thread to go this far without a "don't feed the trolls" comment.

It kinda reminds me of bear defense threads in the hunting form - lol.

i have a feeling this is how they are going to fight it in court. right from the FRT listings. about the 870MCS

non-restricted
