Just wondering, could the ban on handguns in Canada ever be lifted in the future? Please don't ask me what I'm smoking.

The OIC (Order in Council) freezing handgun transfers in Canada could be rescinded at any time the Prime Minister desires.
It was a change in regulation, not debated on in parliament, nor was it voted on in Parliament.
The OIC was a prelude to bill C21 that is slated to prohibit the other half of handguns in Canada that were not prohibited by the Liberals in 1995 with the passage of Bill C68 and the creation of the 12(6) handgun class on gun licenses.
It is not a ban on possession of handguns, it is a freeze that stops the legal transfer of title showing ownership of handguns.
As it is an OIC and not an act of parliament it can be rescinded by Mr. Trudeau.
If there is a legal action taken against the OIC then the court would put a stay on any action the government could take under the terms of the OIC until the courts determine if the Prime Minister had the power to proclaim the OIC.
So there may be a legal remedy to the OIC, there may be a political remedy with a change of heart by the Liberals in power. - do not hold your breath

Yes it could be lifted. If it’s not put into legislation like bill c21 would do, it could be lifted by another government with an OIC. If it is put into legislation it would take another piece of legislation to remove it.

Your unedited response nailed it in far fewer words.
I like it, it is worth reading and very effective.
Thank you

Impossible is nothing

With the right folks in parliament anything is impossible.
Jean Chretien proved that when he and Alan Rock prohibited all guns in Canada in 1995

Jean Chretien Liberal government amended Section 91 of the criminal code to make possession of any gun a criminal code offense. The gun license is only a temporary (5 year) amnesty from conviction for possession of any gun.
The only reason the gun license exists is so the bureaucrats can recommend that guns be removed from the protection of the gun licence and the Prime Minister uses and OIC (Order in Council) to remove that protection the license gives.
That is what happened May 1, 2020 when the Liberals prohibited 1500 brands of hunting and target sporting guns in Canada. They lied and called them assault rifles (Assault rifles were prohibited in 1968 in Canada)
Bill C 21 seeks to end legal possession of many hunting and target rifles as well as the legal possession of handguns in Canada.
The Liberals prohibited one half of the handguns in Canada as of February 14, 1994 (retroactive from December 1, 1998 when C68(1995) came into effect) and now they are prohibiting the other half with Bill C 21
The gun license is key to ending legal possession of firearms in Canada.

And most gun owners in Canada don't even know that.

Most gun owners are proud of their gun license. They think it makes them special.
I have 12(x) status on gun license - that means I have to be extra careful during renewal and transfers.
the 12(x) is not special - the 12(x) shows that I possess guns the government deems "Triple Triple Triple" illegal but I get a bye from conviction because I bought a gun license
the Restricted portion allowing restricted firearms deems the handguns I possess are "double double" illegal but I get a bye from conviction because I bought a gun license
The gun license means the rifles I possess are simply illegal but I get a bye from conviction because I bought a gun license

The whole point of the Liberals amending Section 91 of the criminal code to make possession of a firearm a criminal code offense was to make possession of a firearm a criminal liability for those folks who had guns at the time.
The bureaucrats and police are slowly harvesting guns using the gun license as a tool to prohibit. One class of guns at a time.
The only time they harvest guns is when they go to your home for a reason other than guns. Domestic dispute, bad news, what ever.
They ask the innocent question "any guns in your home?" If your answer is yes then the investigation starts. "May I see them?" "are they safely stored?" "do you have a gun licence?", "does your gun license allow legal possession of these guns?" "Does any one without a license have access?" Any wrong answer or deemed wrong answer is going to give you a legal bill and a possible Firearms possession prohibition. And you may lose your property (guns).

There many people that don't know you need a licence to buy a gun ,or how you buy a HG while they wonder around gunshows.
Had a police chief pissed off when I told him he could not buy a chief special from me a few yrs back, after C68 came into effect.
Have had a FAC presented to me for a sale more then once in the last 20 yrs.

This is an ongoing failure of the Main Stream Media that started in 1994 with the failure to report ALL amendments to the criminal code associated with non violent, non victim, administrative Firearms act infractions with criminal penalties. The abuse of the criminal code by the Liberals was to put it bluntly , criminal ....

Technically any time the Governor General or King want - they sign it. It is requested by the government.

But in reality .... semantics as no GG has ever said no.

You say the Liberals prohibited one half of handguns in Canada but left out the part that Progressive Conservatives, Reform Party and NDP voted in favour of the prohibition. Quebec Party was the only to oppose it.

Which is interesting because I’ve heard very little from PC’s regarding handgun ban in this bill as well.

Alan Rock also proved that all the protesting we do will make no change in the outcome of gov'ts decisions.

As proven by the Parliament Hill protest. I was there, and it was packed!
