So I have a mosin nagant I borrowed from my dad for the summer. He's had it for about 15-20 years and although he kept it well cleaned and oiled on the surface he never took it apart before. So I decided to clean up the bolt and a few other compontents.

The bolt is covered in a very thick dark grease. Like I said this has been there for at least 15 years. So should I clean this off and replace it with some new oil? What type of oil should I use on the bolt? Will rem oil keep it corrosion free for a while?

I'm sure that rifle is happy to be cleaned! Little bit of gun oil will be fine, better than grime or dirt anyways.

Good idea to strip it completely (removing the handguard and stock) to see how the barrel is doing under the wood...
