I have noticed that some pistols from Europe come with the serial number engraved on the frame, barrel and slide. eg CZ, Girsan, and on Beretta's 92A1. That said my Tanfoglio made in Italy does not.

Does anyone know why some companies serialize their pistols in this manner. I ask partially out of curiosity, as doing so would add costs to the companies product with little if any corporate gain. Is their some agreement in play or some legislation mandating such action?

I would prefer that all guns did that. I have several multiples of various models rifles. It is nice to be able to the parts back in the correct gun. I have some AR-15s that will not interchange bolts, for example.

I have a small electric engraving tool that I use to mark bolts and barrels.

I also like the idea of the same number on major parts. It makes it easier at the factory when mating those parts, great for the customer like Ganderite mentions, & good for future owners to see if the marked parts are original.
I see a lot of this on old guns. I'm thinking about the old colt single actions, main frame, grip frame, cylinders, loading gates.....
Not so much on modern, but look at the convertable single action rugers, they usually mark the extra cylinder & the grip frame under the grips with an electric pencil with the last 3 digits of the serial number for mating those parts on the assembly line.

Just thought of it,...Once the UN marking system starts there will be less room to engrave so that will save money!;)
