I am thinking of picking up a 9mm for basic plinking at the range. S.I.R. has two advertised that look interesting:

Taurus PT-99 $619
Ruger P89 $520

Which of these is the better buy ? I want something reasonably accurate and one that will be trouble free with reloaded ammo. I had a CZ75 in the past that worked perfectly. How do these compare to this ?

Thanks for the advice.

My .02... for what it's worth... Of the two I'd take the Ruger... but really wouldn't opt for either... I'd spend a little more and get another CZ...

Well for starters if you are looking at the Ruger P89 in blue, look at Wholesale Sports. It sells for $479:eek: (look on their website dub dub dub dot wholesalesports.com) click on shooting and then Firearms dropdown. U may also want to check into the final price at SIR as they also have a habit of requiring triggerlocks etc for restricted, all at your cost of course..
Just a suggestion

I've owned my pt-99 for over 10 years and love it. Never had a problem with it going bang. However..getting parts for Taurus guns up here is a nightmare.
I don't have any personal experience with Ruger 9mm handguns but I'll read and always heard they are built like a tank.

I had a P89, and I'd get another one in a heart beat. :D

Wholesale sports has the best prices on Rugers, usually. Listed at $479.95 on their website.. wrong pic though! :p

I'd go with Taurus for sure. very reliable since it's a beretta design. Quite accurate too; I know a firearms instructor that has one, man I wish I could shoot like that...

Holleyman, sorry but you must not be looking hard enough. ask/pay Taurus fans on US boars to get you the spring or call a US gun store and ask them to send you one. or what about FN sports?

btw splatter no Beretta doesn't have that part.

I too was in need of a small part a few months back. I contacted Taurus at their Customer Service in Brazil. I explained the problem we are having here in Canada with their authorized repair depot not doing any repairs as they claim they cannot obtain parts but it is more akin to they do not want to make the effort to do so. I also explained the Miami office was of no help at all as they will not deal with Canadians.. Taurus Brazil sent me the part within 10 days..I was impressed:eek: .
Just a little suggestion..

I had a friend who works at a gun shop in Miami try and get some fellow gunnutz and I some Taurus parts...no dice and he is in the same friggen city.

I have owned both & I would never buy another Ruger P85 or P89 the Ruger has a springing feel on recoil, I hate that. I have owned 3 Taurus guns PT99AF - PT99AFD & PT92AF I like the fact you can go cocked & locked like a 1911 safety Go with Taurus it has a better feel in the hand and shoots great.

Ruger has a repair depot in Quebec, they can get anything from Ruger they say
They are the ones doing the recall work on the P85 for Canada
