Question on scope mechanics

I know that the "which is the best scope" debate has gone on ad nauseum but here is my question

In your learned opinions which company makes the scope with the best internal mechanics.

1) You move 1 click the POI moves one click and not having to turn ten
clicks just to get it to move.
2) Holds its zero. Ideally I would like to set the zero then leave the dam
thing alone. I'm not into dialing in windage or hold over. Sort of a set and
forget thing.
3) No POI changes when you change powers
4) No fogging up.
BTW I do know that one must check the rifle and practice on a regular basis.
I would gladly give up a bit of optical long range clarity at high power for solid mechanics if I could get something truely dependable for under $400.
Simple,solid, no bells and whistles. and dependable in a variable power.

Vintage weaver micro trac is choice, new scopes, leupold , burris, or bushnell, to mention a few, 1.5 to 10 power , ie 2x7 , 2.5 x 8 , 1.5x 6 etc

Most any "reputable" company will meet all four of your criteria.

For under $400 you could buy a pretty good used scope. New Falcons are in that range before taxes. Used Falcons come up on the EE from time to time under $400. You can also look at either Leupold or Bushnell. It depends on how high you want to go with the magnification as to whether you would need to look for used or new in those two brands.

You aren't going to touch any of the high end stuff for $400. But you don't really need to either

In the leupold line. Does the VXI line have the same basic mechanics as the VXIII ? Is the only difference in the glass or does the VXIII line have superior mechanics as well ?

$400 retail for some scopes may not get much eg Retail $400 = Wholesale $200 = Distributor $100 Importer $50 Manufacturer $25 = Cost to produce $10 (plus packaging cost $2.50). It is not uncommon to find parts of the supply chain taking 100% markup for risk, overhead, warranty etc etc....I really don't know how many intermediaries there are in optics distribution or what their markups are but to survive they can't be trivial. May be hard to meet your criteria for $400

Another question: Would a 30mm tube scope be stronger mechanically than the std 1" tube or is it only an advantage in low light situations.

A 30mm tube can be stronger due to it's larger diameter,but it does NOT offer any advantage in low light situations.

Actually the larger tube size just allows for more adjustment of those doodads and thingies.
