From what I recall, M70 action for short (308 case) and standard length (30-06 length) is one length except that there is a plug in the back of the magazine for the short case. Question I have is if that plug is removed, can one chamber a standard length cartridge such as 30-06 on a short action (308W length)? Is the ejection port same on both or, is the short action ejection case long enough to discard a standard length empty case?

Thanks for your input.

The Model 70 came in both .308 l/a and a 308 s/a. Only the l/a variety had the plug in the box mag. You can use the long action for any l/a calibres such as the 30-06. The s/a...you're limited to s/a stuff (308, 22-250, 243, etc.).

So, if the magazine has a plus which I can visibly see, does it mean it is a 308 LA? Many thanks.

Until the short action Model 70 was introduced, all receivers were long, and magazines were blocked when shorter cartridges were chambered. A long model 70 in .222 was an extreme example.

Got one of those...1975 made 222rem, the mag block is as long as the follower almost.
Pretty ridiculous sized action for a tiny 222, but it does shoot well.
