I'm not sure if this belongs here under Optics or over un the Black and Green Rifles forum but here goes.
I'm not new to shooting (hell I learned to fire centrefire on an FNC1) but I am new to rifles with more than one sighting system. My current AR has an Elcan on it but my new AR (on order) will come with a full length flat top. I'm considering buying a Vortex Sparc for it (I have a Sparc on my tac shotg gun) but I'm also looking at back up iron sights for it. Here's where I get confused.
I understand the concept of having your BUIS co witnessed on your red dot but the question is, do you use the BUIS by stripping the scope off the rifle first or is the idea that if the scope goes US, do you just flip the BUIS up and sight through the non-working or now out of zero scope (i.e. you don't remove the scope)?
I like the competition idea of having a variable power scope on top and a small red dot canted to the side for shorter distances but I won't be shooting in much 3 gun here in Nova Scotia (as much as I'd like to). Most of my shooting will be at 200 yards or less, a little out to about 250, and the vast majority will be at 100 and even 50 yards or less.
Any thoughts or resources on BUIS us out there?
