Question re: Smith & Wesson pistol

I am looking for a high quality target pistol in 22lr and the S&W 41 caught my eye.

The price of $1200 for a brand new one seems a little steep for my budget, so I started looking for used. The ones that I've seen described as very good/excellent condition are priced around $600. Not that I'm complaining but a 50% discount seems a bit steep, am I missing something?

Does anyone own one, what is the accuracy like, reliability, overall quality? Any info will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Older 41s were a regular production item, while new 41s are now made by the Performance Center (S&W's custom shop) in limited quantities. This is the primary reason for the price discrepancy. As far as quality is concerned, there is no real difference.
 
Have you ever shot a 41? I have something against them, and I am referring to the, maybe old fashoined way, of one handed, "bullseye" shooting. For me, the grips, the handle, is too near at right angle to the frame. In other words, take a proper grip on it, hold it up to shoot, but keep your eyes closed. Open your eyes and I find the muzzle drooping. It takes an effort to keep it up on target. lMaybe just me? I wouldn't buy a gun without first haddling it.
 
I bought a used S&W 41 as my first gun in June of 2008. I paid around $600 for it which is typical for one in good condition. I found it very accurate and a great pistol to start learning target shooting. My only complaint, and it is common in all the research I did for the 41, is that it is very finicky with ammunition. i use CCI Standard velocity (i read this was one that the 41 seemed to like) but I still have problems with it recycling( the spent shell will eject but it will not pick up the next round). This happens sometimes twice during a 10 round magazine, I haven't tried other brands yet but soon will experiment with some. The other members at my club have told me the 41 is one of the best .22 pistols you can buy.
 
.... Another Brand you might want to have a "look at" is the Hi-Standards. Theres' quite range of Models there, and some different "grip angles" as well. i.e The so called, Military, aimed at the 1911 shooters ). And then there's my favorite .22, the Smith and Wesson K22, a revolver admittedly........ Lower cost, but still excellent value, the Ruger .22 series. .... If possible, try before you buy ! ..... Yes, some Hi Standard pistols looked sort of strange and were usually referred to as, "Buck Rogers guns," but, they were sure good shooting guns. I never owned one, but have shot them, and I prefer them to either a Model 41 or a Model 46 Smith.
A year or so ago I sold, what is most likely the most accurate, finest shooting sporting 22 pistol ever made. The Belgian made Browning Medalist, the gun that accounted for most of my medals won with the 22 pistol.
