Well my M77 in .250 Savage arrived today, but I have some questions. First, it was made in 1987 and has the tang safety, red butt pad and black fore-end. Only the Ultra Light version has the black fore-end, correct?

What was the length of the barrel on that vintage Ultra Light, 20" or 22"?

And lastly, it appears as though it may have been rebarreled. What markings do the factory Ruger M77's of that era have on the barrel? This one only has ".250 Sav." on the top of the barrel (indexed at 12 o'clock). What was the muzzle diameter on the Ultra Light?

Thanks for the help.

A good friend of mine has owned a Light as well as an ultra light, I will ask him about the foreend colors, seems to me they were both different, not sure though, and will ask about the length of barrel.

If it doesn't have half a page of roll markings on the barrel with warnings and instructions on how to get the owners manual on the barrel, it's not factory.

You are lucky that it is rebarreled.
Ruger farmed out the making of the barrels for those early tang safety 77s. They tell me some were good, but the one I had in 243 had a very poor barrel.
And while I'm at it, I couldn't carry it loaded and the safety on, because I kept accidentally pushing the safe to the fire position, just from my hand on the wrist of the rifle.
I complained to Ruger about this and they told me to take it to a gunsmith and have it made stiffer!

I have a Ruger M77V in .243 made in 1976, and it shoots very good with hand loads, factory loads not so good..:)

I have seen an ultra light in 250 Savage and it had all the markings that it should have.
I am sure that all UL's had a 20" bbl. My 308 measures .500 at the muzzle.
A 250 savage..... i'm jealous.

Well I assumed it was a factory chambered .250 Savage, as the fellow told me his father-in-law bought it new. I was suspiscious the moment it arrived. The barrel contour looks slightly heavier than I expected, and it is 22" long. The rifle weighs 6 3/4lbs on my little kitchen scale. The ".250 SAV." stamp is at 12 o'clock and quite far forward - right abouve the fore-end tip. And, as RGV mentioned, it lacks the typical Ruger warnings.

It is a really nice looking little rifle, and balances nicely. The stock also has a nice finish. Hopefully it is a good quality barrel and will shoot well. The seller told me his FIL only used it for target shooting at the range, and rarely at that. It mostly sat in the safe and was never hunted.

I'll post a range report and some pictures later.

For a few details I've got a 1987 production Ruger 77 Ultralight.

- Black forend tip
- The barrel is 18.5" and finishes at 0.503".
- The cartridge stamp is on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight and barely above the stock. It has the instruction manual stamping on the top of the barrel.

Thanks Chuck - I didn't think any of the Ultralights came with sights. I am certain that mine has an aftermarket barrel - oops, I mean custom barrel! :)

Did the "RS" version not have a black forend tip as well as a different style of bolt handle?
1899, it does sound like a "custom" if there are no solicitations for free safety pamphlets.
