In previous years I applied for the antlerless and hunted only in the bow season... this year, I also applied for controlled hunt. I noticed on the license, the antlerless nomenclature “any deer” is placed beside the controlled hunt validation, but not on the “deer license” general.

I’m trying to understand if this means I can only hunt antlerless on the controlled hunt... or if it’s also valid during the bow only season. I’ve tried calling the MNRF but the lines are always busy or cut off during transfer.

Thanks

the controlled hunt is either ##### If on top of that you were successful in the anterless draw you can tag an anterless deer in the unit your anterless tag indicates.
Still only one tag though, you can just apply it to either ### during the controlled hunt.

So if I’m unsuccessful in the controlled hunt, and go back to the bow season, the antlerless is not valid and i can only harvest a buck? Is that a correct summary?

When you apply for the antlerless, you apply for a specific WMU.
If successful, your tag is good for either an antlered in *any* WMU with an open season... or an antlerless in the WMU you applied.

When you apply for the controlled, you again apply for a specific WMU.
If successful, you can hunt during the controlled week in that WMU.

If said WMU is the same as your antlerless tag, you can harvest either antlered or antlerless during the controlled.
If said WMU is not the same as your antlerless tag, you can only harvest an antlered.
Same tag is used either way.

The antlerless tag itself is good all year in the WMU. The controlled license just means you get a week where you can use something other than a bow.

whatever it says on the controlled is only valid in the controlled week, period. If you did not apply for antlerless draw for bow you are SOL for antlerless during bow. Separate hunts completely.

So if I’m unsuccessful in the controlled hunt, and go back to the bow season, the antlerless is not valid and i can only harvest a buck? Is that a correct summary?

^^^^^^^ Correct

Verminaard: his antlerless "any deer" allowance is on his controlled hunt license, not his primary deer license.

Being an antlerless tag, You can still use it on a buck in the WMU that the antlerless is valid for. Meaning you can shoot any deer you want outside of the controlled hunt in that WMU (can shoot any deer in the controlled as well)

But its only for 1 deer either in the controlled, or out.

Antlerless tag should be renamed Any ### tag to avoid confusion.

The controlled license only pertains to when you can hunt. It in itself it is independent of the tag.
They just outline what you can harvest, based on the tag you already posses for that WMU. You don’t have a separate tag that is just for the controlled hunt.

If I get an antlerless tag and don’t apply to the controlled, I can harvest any deer in that WMU with a bow until dec 31. I just can’t be out hunting deer in that WMU during the controlled weeks.

If I get the controlled license, I get an extra week of hunting. Nothing about my tag changes.

If I don’t get an antlerless and don’t apply to the controlled, I can harvest any antlered deer in that WMU with a bow until dec 31. I just can’t be out hunting in that WMU during the controlled week.

If I don’t get the antlerless, but do get the controlled license, I get another week for antlered. Nothing about my tag changes.

In those weeks where I can’t hunt because the controlled is on, I can drive to a WMU where there isn’t a controlled season and harvest an antlered. It doesn’t matter that I have an antlerless tag for another WMU. If the season is open for rifle or bow, my antlerless tag from a WMU 5 hours away is still valid for an antlered.

READ THE REGS:
"controlled deer hunt validations are for antlered or antlerless deer, except a portion are for antlered deer only in WNU" and it lists them. As a hunter I can apply for the controlled validation and if successful and says "antlered or antlerless" I then can go buy a deer license. It has nothing to do with me applying for an antlerless during bow season.

You only have 1 deer tag. if you shoot a deer during controlled hunt, your season is over. No going back to bow hunting for any more. unless you buy additional deer tags. In my area (94 Ontario) you can buy an additional bow only tag for "any deer". on my general tag it says i was successful in doe tag for area 94 bows only. I have an additional tag for this area 94, any deer. I also have a additional tag for "any deer bows only in area 92B. I have a controlld hunt tag for "any deer muzzle loader area 92B.
I have 3 deer tags, not 4
you can only shot "any deer during controlled hunt"
you only have 1 deer licence

Nope
If you apply for a controlled tag and get one, you have another tag that can only be used in that area that week

Your regular tag can be used anywhere there is a season (outside of a controlled hunt)
Thats what the controlled does - it controlls how many people are hunting a given WMU a given week
Some areas have 2 controlled hunts and you can apply for the different weeks

So if i understand you correctly, you have a any deer controlled hunt tag, as well as a general deer tag.

if that is the case you can only hunt antlered deer during any open season and any deer during the controlled hunt week

But you can certainly hunt 2 animals in total, and when you print your tags there should be 2 to print

If there isn't then I am misunderstanding your situation.

But I know when I applied and when tags were mailed I had 2 tags
1 for WMU 90 (IIRC) in the 2nd week Dec for any deer
1 for WMU 82B for any deer (which can also be used for an antlered deer anywhere there is an open season)

Highlighted section is not correct. If your original license is antlered only, you can still take a doe depending on the WMU applied to and its stipulated on the controlled hunt validation tag.

There are only 2 or 3 WMU's that actually have extra tags for the controlled hunt. The rest of them do not give out extras anymore and haven't for a number of years. Not sure what WMU the OP is referring to.

That's too bad. I guess I am a little behind the times... I know when I worked in Simcoe I bought extra tags at the MNR place for the controlled and there were lots to buy.
Shotguns only where I was going.

Yes I think you could get up to 6 extras at one time. Used to see guys at the service Ontario office with outdoor cards from 10 or more different guys in their gang, buying extra tags for all of them. I hunt rifle in 84 in November and go to my sister's in December in 85B for the shotgun/muzzleloader hunt. It was nice knowing I had that extra tag for the controlled hunt.

Ok, so just to make I have the logic being presented straight...

I straight up buy a tag... 45 bucks.
I then succeed in the controlled after applying. No fee for applying.
I now have two tags for 45 bucks. One for an antlered, anywhere open season.
One which may be for either/both, depending on WMU the controlled is in, which is only good for the controlled week.

I apply for the antlerless, succeed, and buy my tag... 45 bucks.
I then succeed in the controlled... again no fee to apply.
I again have two tags for 45 bucks. One which is antlered anywhere, antlerless in the WMU.
A second one which may be for either/both, depending on WMU again, which again is only good for the controlled week.

End result either way... I can fill one tag before the controlled, and one during... or one tag after the controlled, and one during.
Thus, simply applying and being successful in the controlled draw gives me a free tag (cause it’s free to apply). I only need an additional tag that year if I want to harvest 3.

‘Cause that definitely is not the way that anybody I know has ever gone about it. For reference, WMU’s 85, 86, 90, 91, and 92 would be the WMU’s and their sub-units that people I know/I hunt.

Tag which was purchased up front goes on the deer. Controlled validation (cause there were no notches) stays in pocket in case the CO’s stop you while you are pushing for the others.
