i just picked up a nice winchester model 12 today. i must confess i think i like this old timer better than my new 870 express.

anyway, the reason for my post was to ask if any of you guys know how to gain access to inside the mag tube. i know how to take the barrel off but i cant figure out how to open the tube to remove a mag plug left behind by the previous owner.

Sksnujack, congratulations, the Model 12 is a fine firearm.

To get into the tube, there is a spring on the pin which you use to take the barrel off (the one you push to be able to turn the mag tube). You need a pick or something to push it up while you pull the pin right out of the housing. The cap on the muzzle end of the magazine has 2 small screws which must then be removed. When you take out the screws, then the cap will come off, and the spring will come flying out - don't aim it at your face.

An exploded diagram is here: http://www.gunsworld.com/exploded/win12.htm

so i removed the pin that enables you to rotate the magazine but at the muzzel end of the tube i dont have to small screws but 2 dowels. im guessint this was a quick fix at one time for the previous owner as the steel does not match the existing. i cant remove these things they are in there good.

Well, if you can't punch them out, you might have to drill them out, but I think a punch would work. Then go find some screws and put it back together properly.

Do you really want the plug out? It was no doubt put there to make a legal hunting gun.

the location of the dowels are on the same plane as the large pin that rotates the barrel just at a different location around the mag tube.
if i were to punch them out there doesnt seem to be a place for them to be pushed out to. (hope this description makes sense)

i think drilling is my only option, the metal pins are tight in there but are of a very soft metal. only worry i have is wont i mess up the threads if i drill and how would i replace the screws, maybe just put in pins again once i remove the barrel plug
