Question :Reloading cartridges 7.62x39 ?

150gr+ bullets are likely too heavy for the charge you can get into the small cartridge. I would think you would get some serious overpressure as well as low velocity. If you can find reloading data I'm sure bullet weights between 100-130gr would be the norm.

There are some instructional vids on youtube showing how to reload burden primed steel cases. I would think finding brass would be best though. Keep in mind US made 7.62 short brass is generally weak so look for euro made brass.

Yup. Largest bullet my Hornady 7th edition lists is a 130-grain'er.

With all the crates still available (if you look around), I have to ask - why?

Yeah, I haven't loaded'em yet but they look really good and strong.

I've got two crates sitting in a closet but godDAMN sometimes I just wanna take my SKS out to the range without having to take the thing apart and pour hot water down every nook and cranny afterward.

Remington 150gr. fmjbt bullets can be loaded to fit the magazine. I think I have some reload data and maybe accuracy results. I will look tomorrow to see what I have and post then.

155 grain amax bullet loaded with 15 grains of herc 2400 is the top left corner target.

Pistol bullets will have a hard time feeding in an 858. I tried some cast 150 grain 30 cal bullets with a blunt nose. They would slam into the feed ramp and did not feed. For the 858 the bullets need to be pointy. Perhaps they could work in a sks.

for some it may be as easy as wanting to follow the law and not using a full metal jacket round.also no indoor range that I know of would let you use a steel round as it would destroy their backstop

for hunting, all you do is buy a puller. Pull the bullets on your surplus rounds, reload powder and soft points.. done, dirt cheap berdan primed, legal-for-hunting-in-canada sks rounds.. just make sure to clean with boiling water soon as your home or back at camp.

edit: im assuming of course you have reloading equipment already, otherwise you need more than just a kinetic puller

i tried some"mexican match" rounds this weekend.
try to find norinco non-corrosive (yellow, green or silver box) and pull the fmj bullets along with the powder.gun shows are a good place to find norinco ammo.
after inserting the powder of your choice, crimp the new soft-point bullets.
you don't have to worry about chasing that precious boxer primed brass around or be fearfull of denting the cases...

I used the following through my VZ 58 without incident:

Powder: IMR 4227
Bullet: 123gr Soft Point
Charge: 21.5grs
Brass: Mixed Headstamp
Velocity: Dunno?

I emailed Barnes for loading info for their 123gr bullets. If anybody wants a copy of the PDF, PM me with an email address and I can send it to you. This is for the Barnes TSX and Tac X Bullets. They don't list info on their site, or in their manual.

Try this website. It will answer 90% of your questions I would think.

So basically your breaking down the surpluss ammo simply for the disposable case. Good Idea.

Mind if I ask what Crimp die your using?? Im partial to the Lee Factory crimp die as that way Case length is not so critical.

hi abhobby:

i used the lee crimp die.
i found that the loads they give in the book (i'll have to look and see which book i used) are very tame, even when you near max. load...
