Question: What do honest groups look like.???

When a load is dialed in and give a thight group you know the capabilities of your rig, mainly all the not so good groups will be the shooter error, i dont want to show these... JP.

If my pistol shot a 5" group I would be really pi$$ed....

An honest group to me is one that tells the truth from that particular outing. I have shot a couple of absolutely outstanding groups, but the conditions were perfect, both environmentally and personally. Other days, I have gone with the same rifle and ammo, but could hardly hit the ground if I fell on it!
 
An average group for me would be about 1.5 maybe 2 inch at a hundred yards. Since I am a not a die hard target shooter and usually shoot clay pigeons at 100 yards( obviously on the ground and not in the air) with my rifle I am Happy.
 
groups are great for enforcing marksmanship principles; however, cold bore first round hits in varied weather is the real deal imho
 
Once you accomplish a very tight group, you know that a moment or another you will repeat that performance, the shooter and the elements are the variables, the rifle, the reload and the optic are the stable part of the equation, i agree with crashman you can shoot 2 or 3 stellars groups, after that only ordinary ones, a stellar group is a great satisfaction... JP.

Last outing with a Marlin XS7 in 223. Handloaded 52gr Hornady Match...

That was shot consequitivly and fairly fast...i was shooting 200 yards all day and these were done just to finish off the ammo at 100 so i can go pick up the target before i leave.

Did it shoot that good all day? nope....but to have 3 groups of 4 shots all less than an 1" is good for me.
 
I though the proper reply to that header would have been, "An honest group looks a lot like some CGNers together."
 
I deleted this post earlier because I thought we were all going to post our average groups, but since others have chimed in I'll put my current best back up.

Seven shots at 300y (Stittsville, in perfect conditions) with my competition .308 built by Juan Valdez. 1.199" outside, so 0.891" group if I did my math right.

Can rimfire rifles play here too? :D I've finally found the velocity ammo mine likes. Got the tuner dialed in and shot this target this morning. We'll see how it does in competition next weekend. The rifle is an Anschutz 54 Match action, 26" Llilja barrel, McMillan benchrest stock and topped with a Leupold Competition 45X.
