Question: What is the Restricted part?

I thought I was clear that(on semi-autos) the handgun "grip" is the restricted part and the slide non-restricted….right?
Then why does both the slide and the barrel on my Glock have the serial number and not the grip(or do I need to look closer). Does it confuse the registration folks if I buy another OEM Glock barrel and/or slide (and end up having different serial#s).

My Ruger MKIII also has the serial# on the barrel and not the grip. I was told in this case the barrel is the restricted part….got me thinking.

I'm sure someone can set me straight on this….I've been scratching my head most of the day.
 
The upper receiver of the Ruger MK pistols is the part that is considered to be the firearm. On most handguns, the frame is the classified part and is what constitutes the firearm. I am working on a design that allows you to use your Ruger MK lower frame and mate it with a 26" OAL upper receiver that should be non-restricted.
 
As stated, the frame is the officially registered part. You can have an additional barrel/slide; for example, you can drop a 9mm barrel or complete Glock 17 slide into a Glock 22 and shoot 9mm. However, don't leave it on or store it that way as you're obligated to call in and update the registration.
 
An interesting (to some people?) bit of information is that in South Africa, the registered, and therefore controlled part of the firearm was the barrel. You could buy as many frames and slides as you wanted without a licence. Other countries, such as Canada, it is usually (but not in every case) the frame, and you can buy as many barrels and slides as you want without a licence.

It lead to some interesting situations. A former colleague of mine had a Browning barrel registered. It just happened to be attached to a select fire BAR.

That's very interesting MWL. Im also(facetiously) imagining the SA news team reporting the police had found a 'cache' of weapons in Capetown..consisting of a dangerous collection of steel tubes..
 
In SA, when they find a cache of weapons, it usually means a box or two of AK47s, RPG7s, hand grenades, and several thousand rounds in spam cans. Anything less doesn't even make the news, and in most cases, neither will that.

I'd be particularly interested. 1" OD 0.75" ID tubing is readily available! I was thinking 10/22 barrel with a sleeve to bring it up to 0.75" OD. Then a Dremel hack job on the 1" tube. How were you going to attach the barrel?

Is this actually true? I have a CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow and I regularly store and transport it with my .22lr Kadet kit on it only. My registration papers for the Shadow does not specify what calibre it is (9mm) only that it is a "CZ", "Semi-Automatic" so I don't know how I would be in the wrong here.

Strange that your Registration Certificate doesn't list calibre... Every one of mine does other than stripped AR lowers as they aren't designated until I call in to update the registration once it is changed (eg: completed with a LPK and mated to an upper). At that point I've always had to report caliber and barrel length.

Not sure what it's like in Saskatchewan, but in BC our registration papers state that you have to call in and report any changes to the firearm within 30 days of modification (or something along those lines). You could explain you JUST put the Kadet kit on if Cst. Dudley Dooright has stopped you, but it seems easier to just store and transport in the registered configuration.

Yes, I see on my registration the wording "any modification to the type, action, calibre or gauge of the firearm". But as I said, there is no listing of calibre anywhere, not even a blank box on the certificate where the calibre would be listed. It was only registered in October if that means anything.

I will carve it out of a solid piece of steel or aluminum. No way I'm cobbling it together with a dremel and tube. Barrel will be threaded in just like the factory barrels are.
