Question: will 'not too clean' brass be fine?

You just need to follow this advice, tumbling is not necessary just something to make your brass look nice.
Think of it as fishing lures, most of them are made to catch the fisherman into buying them and not the catching the fish.

Well said..I have tackle boxes full of the stuff, but do most of my catchin' with a hook and worm or minnow...

Shiney-new is neat, but not really necessary. One thing about a tumbler, a real advantage, is that it makes it much easier to see splits developing.

Oh, personally, I wouldn't use steel wool on a brass case. If it's bad enough that you need steel to clean it, it's probably not worth keeping. Some will disagree, but that's my two bits, anyway.
