Pre-98 won't mean a thing for a Winchester 1892, unless you're planning on welding the lifter in place and making it a single shot.
 
The last serial number for 1897 was 159312, according to Madis. Pre-1898 Model 1892's are not considered to be antique in Canada, but pre-1899 Model 1892's are considered to be antiques in the USA. The last serial number of 1898 was 165431. (in other words, in the USA, legal antiques are rifles made in 1898 or earlier. In Canada, legal antiques are single shot rifles made before 1898, and larger than a certain size caliber (which I can't remember at the moment). Buying antiques in the USA really simplifies things, as they are not regulated in the USA (I got this first hand from BATF). Thus, you do not need a US export permit to take them out of the USA.
