Questions about building an AR type rifle with a different caliber than .223

I think 6.8 SPC is the better hunting round but ease of finding a barrel and bolt is important.

A 6.8 bolt is easy to find. Several site sponsors have either bolts or complete bcg's. But I agree that finding an 18.6" 6.8 barrel was a b!t@#. Sure I could get one made but I didn't want a lot of money into a barrel for a not so popular caliber.

Ended up finding an 18.6" six eight barrel for an ACR on the EE. Guy claimed he only fired 50 rounds and by the look of it I believe him.

Finding the oddball stuff requires a lot of patience. Selling it again requires even more...

..260 is dated, kinda like plaid . Lol

6.5 CM is where it’s at. All you need is a barrel.

Essentially this is my issue:

I have a bcl in 308 but have found that the recoil has been bothering my head lately (post concussion syndrome) so was looking for a decent deer hunting round with less recoil. I’d like to keep it a nr black rifle for the ergonomics etc...

6.5 is a bit softer shooting, a brake would make it softer still, but you’d need to wear hearing protection .
Reactive hearing protection would be good for hunting, but maybe a bit out of place.

I was hoping for something like a .223 amount of recoil

That's exactly what I have to do. I have the same problem as Mixter, post concussion syndrome and a bad neck. If it weren't for muzzle brakes and good hearing protection I wouldn't even be shooting. And all because several years ago some d-bag drunk mo'f*cker decided to hit me head on at highway speeds.

No large calibers for me. If I sit down and put 20 rounds through my 270 WSM hunting rifle with no brake I end up with a b!t@# of a headache for a day and a half.

I even have a 22-250 that I coyote hunt with that has a brake on it. Anything to soften the blow to the ol' thinker is a big help. Allows me to keep doing what I like to do.

These small frame AR wanna be receiver sets have been a huge blessing for me due to the smooth recoil impulse. I've been shooting more than I have for years. I used to go out and put a few rounds through a rifle and go back home before I paid for it. Now I can shoot as much as I want and truly enjoy it.

You ain’t kidding bro...I’ve been through back injuries, chronic pain etc BUT nothing compares to this!

A semi auto in 6.5 Grendel with a good muzzle brake will be just as pleasurable to shoot.

So going the 6.5 grendel route what would be my nr options? I wonder if this new bcl slr rifle would be suitable

Although going the 260 route with a bcl upper might be the most cost effective route...would I need a new bcg, barrel but etc for the 260?

224 Valkyrie? Or throw a creedmoor barrel on your 308 and be done with it. Very little recoil in the 120 grn size.

In the AR15 size the 224 Valkyrie is a great choice with very little recoil, long range capability and cheap available ammunition. Depending on where you live you may not be able to hunt with it, like in AB. But it definitely has the power.
There are a few options for NR builds
ATRS MS
MDI SLR
BCL SLR

In an AR10 sized platform my vote goes to the 6mm Creedmoor in a Stag 10.
There is also the BCL you can build from, or the Troy 102 or the new Matrix Aerospace.

There are a ton of options in both platforms, really the only deciding factor is barrel, bolt and ammo availability, unless you reload.
Take a look at the ballistics and compare them to your intended purpose to make a decision.
I've had the 224 Valkyrie and 6mm Creedmoor out to 1200 yards, obviously spotting hits/misses was easier with the 6mm vs the Valkyrie as was negotiating the wind. I have had good luck with Hornady factory ammo in both calibers and the Valkyrie is pretty cheap really.

I'm building an SAI-102 in 243win with 2-port brake right now... Deer legal caliber in all Provinces, mild recoil especially with a brake.
Sounds like what you want/need, just swap the barrel in your BCL or build an upper (add another $500 or more to the barrel price).

That is likely the easiest.
Buy a barrel and wrench for your BCL and swap to a 6mm caliber and add a brake.
Sell the old barrel to make up some of the cost.
243, 6mm Creedmoor are both light recoiling cartridges.

^^^ You're going to like that a lot.

I put together a Stag 10 with the IBI .243 Win barrel. I've put a MRA Defiant brake on it since the picture and it made a big difference.
