Questions about getting an SVT 40 or Mosin-Nagant

Hey, I'm really enjoying my SKSes but I have seen a few SVT 40 and Mosin-Nagants available and am wondering if I would enjoy them as much.
I really like the simplicity, low cost and moderate recoil of my SKSes, would I be giving up all that if I get an SVT? What about the Mosin, why
does everyone seems to love theirs? What are they getting out of the deal that I need to experience to understand?

The positives: History, affordable price, affordability of ammo, popularity, fun factor, power.

The Mosin-Nagant has substantially more recoil than an SKS while the SVT-40 is tamed by its gas system and muzzle brake. Add that to the fact that SVT-40s are drying up and their price will probably be up in a year or two and I think you've got an easy decision -- get both.

Get SVT 40 they pretty much dried up with exemption of Lever Arms but theirs will not last too long either

I love my svt's and my mosin, you should buy both. If you like the sks, which I also love then the svt will be a natural step forward. It's not much more work to strip and clean imho but it's a bit finiky till you get the gas system adjusted for which ever brand of surplus ammo you go with. You'll then want a mosin after you fall in love with the 7.62x54r round, gotta have a semi auto and a bolt action to round the collection out. They're both great but different from each other, worth owning both.

The german soldiers loved the svt-40, if they found one on the battle field they would pick it up and use it, not the mosin so much. germans know there stuff

I'd get the SVT40 first, as mentioned the supply on nice ones seems to be drying up this past year or so. Mosins will still be around for a while yet.

As much fun as the SVT is, its kinda a pain to maintain. I'm more of a mosin guy since they are super easy to use and clean. Not many parts to worry about unlike the SVT.

Buy a semi auto rifle while the feds will let you. If previous gun laws are any indication, grandfathering of ownership is possible. Besides that, I prefer Pew Pew Pew to Pew Crank Pew Crank.

Totally agree! X54R is most easily found as corrosive surplus. Waaaay easier to clean a cheapo Mosin than the finicky SVT. With supplies dwindling and collectibility increasing for the SVT, you want to make sure it stays clean and rust free! Besides, the Mosin literally gives a better bang for the buck!

the sks is god for a start like the others say, i then went to mosin and then svt......if you get a mosin, shoot it with and without the bayo on and see a big difference in recoil, the svt, just looks ###y for a ww2 semi-auto....54R is like twice as powerful as the x39. if the sks brings a smile to your face when you turn it loose, the mosin and svt will have you grinning ear to ear brother :) i only put non-corrosive through my svt, i dont have the tool to get the wood off the metal, the mosin just gets the cheap stuff. get em all

If you like a good bang for your buck, the 7.62x54r will feed, SVT40, Mosins, M44, and M38s. They still manufacture this round today, it is available as surplus and many commercial manufactures produce this round for both hunting and sporting purposes. This caliber is not going to go away anytime soon. You can feed a lot on hungry rifles with a low cost case of ammo. There is no other full size bullet/rifles that you can enjoy for such a good price at this time.

Exactly what I was going to say. As much as I love my SVT-40, I find myself shooting my M91/30 more often just because its so easy to clean. If you just want to plink with a rifle and cheap ammunition, go with the Mosin-Nagant. You can still find good examples for under $200.

That said, if you were going to force me to choose just one to buy, it would be the SVT-40. It's just a beautiful rifle.

I personally have found that 54r is a pain in the arse to shoot. The selection and availability of decent shooting clean 54r ammo up here is almost non existent. You can buy the surplus that is corrosive, but if you start shooting that stuff through your SVT 40, expect to be spending A LOT of time cleaning that gun after the range in order to keep it rust free and functioning properly. Owning an SVT 40 can be a huge hassel, but it does make you grin every time you take it out of the safe. I dont really have an attraction for Mosins just because their bolt action, and if wanted to shoot a bolt action, id just grab one of the many hunting rifles i own, all of which shoot better ammo and more accurately than the Mosin ever will.

Get them all while they are cheap and available. I love my svt40. I bought 3 of them and kept the one I liked the most. Amazing shooters and never fail to amaze people with the muzzle blast!

I went mosin then svt 40. I like that the mosin is super easy to clean. If I did it again I would probably buy the svt first just because they are getting rare and a sponsor has then on for $310. Your Russian collection isn't complete until you have both and then a tt-33

Another downside is if you reload........the SVT 40 has a fluted chamber and is rough on brass.I have 4 hex mosins and the worst will shoot 1.5" groups at 100 yards with PRC ball.Too bad someone didn't put out a synthetic stock for the SVT 40 as that would take care of the stock flexing.Harold

I found that after I bought my first SKS and fell in love with plinking 100's of rounds in a single sitting for under $50. Then I actually enjoyed the Mosin much more. It was the goal of accuracy at 100M that drove me to compete against myself and the Mosin allowed that. The SKS is not an accurate rifle. Typically the SVT40 isn't either.

I'd say that if your just having a blast with shooting many rounds with the SKS and want to continue down that road, the SVT40 is even more fun!!! I only shoot cheap machine gun corrosive ammo in my SVT40 because I shoot it by the 100's. It does take a while to clean after though. Really they're not a whole lot more to take care of than a SKS.

BUT! If you think you could see yourself getting into real target shooting and playing against yourself to get better at being a marksman, there's no finer and cheaper way to go than a Mosin. At least until you learn to really shoot. If you find one with a nice bore, they can be tuned up very easily to get accurate enough to out perform the surplus ammo.
