my only CGN complaint is the search function.............

Are the barrels of an smle interchangable with the NO 4 and N05 ? I know they are different but can you make an smle no4/5 hybrid?

can you "make" a reasonable representation of a LE enforcer by switching recievers with an 7.62 indian smle with a no 4 ? (after a stock mod?)

Are all SMLE barrels the same spec s as far as threading go ?

SA Indian, English Austrailian, etc

thanks

As mentioned by Green, same thread but indexed 180 degrees different. No doubt done on purpose to prevent them being mixed.

However, the shoulder can be turned back the distance of half a thread pitch to make it index correctly, but then the breech face also needs taking back, the extractor notch recut and the chamber reamed deeper.

Pretty straight forward work for a smith with a lathe, mill, reamer and guages.

If you want to make an Enforcer clone, an Indian barrel would be a poor choice. It is far to light. An option would be to look for a take-off .308 target rifle barrel, probably 28-30" long, set it back, rebreech and rechamber it.
A No. 5 barrel and a No. 4 barrel have the same breeching, and it should be possible to fit the one to the other.

thats what i thought

the only thing an ishy LE would have to offer would prob be mag ,,,,,,,and those are around

or buy an IAI but 800 or 900........hmmmmmmmn

or shell out 2 or 3 grand for a real one :D

As long as you are gonna be tinknering, why not an AIA clone? A couple of thier models look like they are half way to an Enforcer anyway and come standard in 7.62

I have been mulling that over as well but to butcher an 8 or 900 dollar rifle.........

or spend 8 or 900 in im parts and labour. I have a sportized smle that was my granpas i was also thinking about replacing the barrel on

If it is a SMLE, don't rebarrel it to .308; the action can't handle it. It is the No. 4 that was the basis for 7.62mm conversions.

I just bought a take-off .308 target rifle barrel for a friend's project for $50. This is a ballpark value. If $150 is allowed for fitting, the cost isn't too bad. Rebreeching will remove enough of the original chamber that the leade area will be fresh, and generally the barrel will shoot well for a few thousand rounds.

I wasn't going to ..........I actually thought about restoring it.

aren't some of the indian smles 762?

for another project I would like something like this

its conceptual but it looks cool ...call me immature.

really thats all?

Over the years I have purchased a number of take off target rifle barrels. They have been $25 - $100. Keep in mind, one is a bit of a pig in a poke, but shortened at the breech with a new leade, they usually shoot very well. Should have at least 50% of the life of a new barrel.
The Indian 7.62 SMLEs use a more sophisticated steel than .303 SMLEs. They also used a less rigorous proof testing procedure. The Brits and Australians found that a .303 SMLE receiver would be bent by 7.62 proof.
A No. 4 is a different, stronger action.
