Questions for a good range 308 or 303 bolt action...

I was wondering if I could get some feedback on this...

What would you recommend for a good 308 bolt action rifle with iron sights?...

OR

...Should I be happy with a 303 Enfield 4/2 in beautiful condition seeing how it's already bolt action and 303 is "somewhat" comparable to 308...?

That would entirely depend on what you are trying to accomplish? Putting small bunches of holes in paper, or filling the freezer?

.308 makes a lot more sense to me as a hunting round.
Extremely versatile.
Plenty of choice in rifles under $1000.
I would want a scope on it but that's your decision of course.

Well...

Against popular belief, I would say that the 303 has stacked more critters, both two legged and four, than any other cartridge, so there certainly isn't anything wrong with it. If you have a want, instead of a need, then a new rifle is in order, but you certainly don't need one to fill your freezer, as the 303 is more than adequate.

A 303 Smelly is a fast handling rifle. 10 round magazines, and lots of punch for anything in the woods. Parker Hale FTR, please, with a lower power fixed optic. Rounds loaded with 150's, 180's, and 215's. Probably even rock the synthetic stock, and a 22" barrel, fixed sights for back up. Not much that couldn't be done with it, and you'd still have the better part of $1000 in your jeans.

Wants and needs!!! One will cost you, and the other will make you appreciate what you have already.

I've been wanting to build the rifle described for years now, but locating the very specific donor has proven to be difficult.
Someday!!!
Definitely a want though, not a need!

Personally I'd go .308 for more off the shelf ammo availability.

If you can swing something like a Tikka Battue would be a great rifle with irons.

There are many decent so-called package guns these days. Sold with a scope, sling and not much else, but priced to sell to customers exactly like you.

My brother in law and his son in law bought a pair of Savage long action rifles with Burris or Simmons scopes (whatever was attached by the factory) in 300 Win Mag. They hunted those guns for a couple of years. The son in law dropped a muley buck that got into the bottom of the provincial record book, and the brother in law's just missed out. They each upgraded when the finances allowed, and have done very well each year.
 
Can you keep 3 shots inside a 4" circle at 100 yds. If so what you have will do. As long as you can hit a dinner plate 3/3 times that is your range. A 303/150 gr will do most everything well. I, like a large number here, have shot a lot of game with a 303. I don't notice deer dying any more with the 308. There is a lot of talk on here about shooting deer with a 223,30 M1,357,7.62x39, so on, the 303 is better than those when you look at 150 yd energy. This is mho and it is worth what it cost. AJ
 
Ive got an old .303 british, would you recommend putting a scope on it for hunting? sorry if this hijacks ur post.

No. You're far better off spending $500 or $600 on a modern rifle. It will function every time, parts are readily available, AND there are some which are reliably accurate. It is not the same to say this about "an old .303" in the hands of an ordinary hunter/shooter.
