Ive been more into handguns myself so dont know a wholelot about rifles. X-bolt, A-bolt etcc Could somebody give me a break down of what all that means with the benefits of disadvantages of each. I want to get a rifle that i can hunt with if i feel the need but also want to do some precision target shooting. Have to say the rifle lingo eludes me. Any info would be appriciated, i didnt see any rifle stickys anywhere so figured id ask. I thought huskvarna only made chainsaws :)

There seems to be 3 major price points for rifles. Under $500, $500-1000 and $1000 plus. Often times you can get better advice if you say what you want and how much you want to spend.

I have been looking into just this thing for awhile. From what I gather the best cheapest rifle is

Stevens 200

For alittle more money the Marlin XLs seem to be real popular.

After that you get into the Rugers, Savages, Remingtons, Winchesters, CZ, Tikka

Then from there you start getting into the pricier stuff like Cooper, Sako, Steyr, Higher end Weatherbys and lots more brands.

Figure what you want to shoot, how much for a rifle, what ranges and terrain- this dictates barrel choice, action choice and optic choice. Weight of the rifle is also a factor.

I have no problem spending over 1000. I want a high quality rifle, i plan to use it mostly on the shooting range, but if i want to take it out hunting id like that to be an option also. Your right there is so much out there i dont even know where to start. Whats the Glock of the rifle world?

My personal favourite is a Swiss Arms rifle, but that might not be what your looking for. They come in non restricted in .223. You might want something more versatile.

When I was to chose my rifle I spoke with a few hunters. 30-06 is one versatile caliber, more or less magnum, thou not officially one. It can take any game in North America. Ammo is very available in many bullet weights and is reasonably cheap, my rifle likes 165gr bullets thou and it is sufficient for anything including moose, I got some 180gr bullets for those thou. I got Savage in 30-06 and Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 BDC scope, all in all it cost me around and under $600. Last 3 rounds I fired had under 3/4" group at 100m. If I had another 3-4 bills to spend, I'd go with Tikka in same caliber. If I had more $$$ - I'd go with Sako.
