Questions from newbie

Never owned a shotgun before but plan to buy a one. So here are some "silly" questions to ask:

1. Budget is limit and want to keep it around $500
2. Can one shotgun fulfill most purpose: like shooting waterfowl, using slug for big game, of course can't miss home defender(don't want it too long)
3. If can't meet above requirements, can you recommend a one to me please?

Shotgun hunting good to use 26" to 28" barrel with screw in choke system which is many modern shotgun were designed for. $500 is quite a reasonable budget. But mind you a longer barrel still can use for home defense but a 14" barrel shotgun is not that perfect for hunting. Gun choice is very personal and I think you already come up something you like. Any pump or semi can do the job nicely.

Your best bet is a pump action ,and you're probable looking at a Mossberg 500or a Reminington 870 with a 2nd barrel.

Mossberg sells a package deal shotgun called the 535 ATS (all terrain shotgun), retails for around $320 and basically consists of a 535 pump shotgun with a 28" vent rib barrel, threaded for accu-choke tubes, and a rifled slug barrel with rifle sights. The reciever is also drilled and tapped for scope mounts. If I were looking for an all-in-one package, that'd be it. Failing that, you could go for a Maverick 88 w/28" vent rib barrel (also threaded for accu-choke tubes), and then buy a rifled slug barrel for it later. The Mav goes for about $200 and rifled slug barrels go for $160. As you can see, the 535 ATS is a better deal, but it depends what your finances are like I guess.

Waterfowl, get 3" chamber. 3-1/2" not necessary. The slug barrel can stay on in the house as the defender configuration. Either the 26" or 28" barrel would be fine for almost any kind of hunting.

they're about 520$ and can shoot 2 3/4 - 3 1/2
