i just bought my first firearm last wednesday, a cheap but sweet remington 870 express 18 inch barrel whith a mag extention (7).
whent to try it today shooting clays for the first time in my life (boy i suck!!!) i know it is not the best shotgun for clay but i liked it so much, when i came back home i bouth a 30 inch barrel whit chokes!!
ok on whith the questions, we where using cheap 2 3/4winchester target shells and sometimes after a shot the action was jammed (could not pump it open) we ad to stugle to open it up.
as we shot more, the probleme was going away. is there a break-in shot count on these???? , is it the cheap ammo or should i go see a gunsmith??

secondly, i cleaned the new barrel i just bougth and there was a lot of rust stain on the rag i used. is that normal??

is it normal that i can open the breach whitout pressing on the lever under the trigger group when it is not cocked ????

another question, on the new barrel it is stamped 2 3/4, 3 and 3 1/2
and the original is stamped 2 3/4 and 3
is it ok to shoot 3 1/2 inch loads whit the new barrel installed?? (may seem stupid but i am soooooooooo newb!!! at firearms)

thanks!!!!!

I bought a new 870 two days ago. The action on mine is a little sticky. Some of the cheap Federal target shells I was using stuck a little bit as well. It just seemed like it needed to be broken in.

Your new barrel may be able to accept 3 1/2 inch shells but your receiver won't. You would need a super magnum receiver to fire 3 1/2 inch shells. So your new barrel is 3 1/2 but the old receiver isn’t.

Just cheap ammo, you can however polish the chamber to reduce this. problem is in the cheap aluminum hull that expanded when the shell fires.

and yes when it is not in the cocked possition, you can shuck it without the lever pushed in

If the problem persists, see a smith. The cheap express should handle cheap ammo O.K. The button does not need to be depressed after the shot is fired to open the action. A rusty rag is normal when cleaning a new remington barrel. As per remington instructions, you should only use 2 3/4 or 3 inch loads with that action, no matter what it says on the barrel.

I had the same problem with mine sticking. I polished the chamber the way someone on here told me to do it.

Wrap some 000 steel wool around a cleaning brush, put on some metal polish, stick it in a drill and have at her until the chamber feels warm to the touch. It seemed to help with mine.

Yeah I bought my 870 Express 3 weeks ago and been to the range 4 times...the 1st 20 or 30 rounds kinda jammed the pumping action. But the more I used it the better it got and now it just pumps like butter!

Any good ideas for aftermarket cammo stocks????

I got a chance today to put 100 rounds of the cheap value pack shells through mine today. Not one lock up since I did the polishing someone here told me about which I described in my earlier post. Thanks CGN!

870 Express Observation

Specifically with the 870 Express; while in the shooting position (gun cocked, ready to fire) if you prematurely apply pressure (return stroke) to the fore-end this will cause it to "stick".... this should be easily observed when dry-firing.

The work-around is to not apply pressure until after the round has been fired, but this will affect your speed.

Note: As far as I know this is only encountered on newer 870 Express models.

I've got 2 of these babies. A 3 1\2" that I bought new, and a 3" that I bought used. It takes a few dozen rounds to break in, but, by far I love these shotguns! I have some more expensive shotguns, but I tend to always use my Remi's. After shooting about 20 -30 rounds through a new 870, it does loosen up. Breaking in any gun is necessary. A new one just needs to be shot a dozen times, a good cleaning and oiling. For the price, you can't go wrong, and will be totaly happy with performance.
