I just spent the last two weeks looking at spotting scopes myself.
Depends what your budget is.In the up to $500 dollar range believe it or not I found the glass quality of the Browning 15-45x65 spotting scope to be the hands down winner.Comes with a tripod, heavy duty carry case.
I ended up going with a Bushnell Elite 20-60x80.It is a little more money but the quality is second to none.
Leupold variable wins hands down. It is very light and shorter than most. I've used scopes all my life and never found one better, although they're not cheap. But better one good one than three cheap ones over the years!
Well, if we're talking about the best spotting scopes available then, Zeiss Diascope 65 T*FL, Swarovski ATS 65HD, or if you want to save some money get a Nikon Fieldscope III 60mm ED (aka Tactical Fieldscope TF3).
If you want to learn about optics check out the birdforum.net.
The top 3 (Leica, Swarovski and Zeiss) will have the finest quality in the money is no object catagory. If money does matter may I suggest you look at the 2 Pentax (PF80ED & PF65ED), The Minox line of spotters, or the Nikons.
If I can assist you in any way please feel free to call me and pick my brain.
For 300 yards, I assume you are shooting .30 or 7mm and up. I recommend 60X for 300 meters. You can go down to 50X if you are using high quality lens (The price goes up).
I found the bigger the lens, the brighter the image.I went with a 80 mm objective and it seems nice!!!I bought the celestron ultima 80.20-60x It is a bloody big scope, good for the range but not convenient for hunting I wouldn't think.
