Questions re Setup for slugs.

I have 2 shotguns. (Actually I have 4 but I'm not considering blasting slugs through my Franchi O/U nor the Baikal 153.)
A Win model 1200 12 ga.
A Rem model 870 20 ga. (youth, short barrel)

I'm going to need a shotgun for deer.

What kind of accuracy can I expect with either of these shotguns if I use a rifled choke and what is the best slug to use with a rifled choke?

Same question but using an IC choke, again best slug to use for this setup?

Sights. Is there anything available for a rear sight instead of just having the front bead only?
 
My baikal 153 loves rio star and challenger 1oz slugs thru a mod choke. 2.5" 3 shot groups at 50 yards with bead sights. I've never used a rifled choke so can't comment on that
 
I shoot rifled slugs out of my Mossberg 500 with a 28'' barrel using the IC choke. Sights are mid bead aligned with front bead. Accurate up to 30-40 yards for me, but was good enough for me to bag my first doe! Stopping power at 25 yards with a 1 oz 12 ga slug has no equal.

I think that's giving a thimble shaped lead slug more credit than it deserves, but each to their own.

I found that plain Jane Winchester 1 oz foster slugs were consistently the most accurate from an open choke smooth bore barrel, perhaps 4 MOA at 100 and IMHO Bennekes give the best terminal performance.
 
aside from Mosinmaster is anyone else using an mid bead aligned with the front bead? Or just using the front bead only.

And Bryben, did you try the IC choke with the 153 before you went to the mod? I ask because, to date where ever I have looked, most are using the IC choke with slugs.
Then again I don't know how the Baikal chokes measure out against the other brands.

I don't really care what shape it is, it's heavy, it's soft lead, it's supersonic, and it's .70+ calibre - that is undeniable shocking and stopping power at close range. I found the Winchester BRI sabots to be very accurate out to 75 yards with IC.
 
I was using Federal managed recoil tru-ball slug. They say that the plastic ball behind the slug, centers the slug better in the barrel. I tried a couple brands, you find my thread on my results.

You should. Hit a heavy bone on a big animal and the fosters pancake and give up what little penetraion they have under ideal circumstances, where a Brenneke or a Challenger won't. But this idea that a shotgun is a powerhouse is overstated IMHO. No shotgun slug can compare with the power from a powerful rifle due to the superior penetration possible from the latter.

If we compare the 12 ga slug to a similar rifle (similar by projectile weight) a .458 bullet that is similar in weight, either in soft point or TSX configeration, easily meets or exceeds .73" upon expansion and its higher velocity and stronger construction ensures deeper penetration. The fact that a one ounce 12 ga foster slug is 64% larger in diameter, and 25% slower, than a one ounce .458 bullet doesn't bode well for the little pumpkin ball in any kind of real comparison, but I guess it depends on how you define power; I like bullets that exit.

Shotgun slugs have their place in big game hunting scenarios, given certain limitaions such as range, shot angle, and target size, but its a mistake to consider an off the shelf 12 bore on par with a powerful rifle in circumstances where power matters.
 
Agreed. 12ga scatterguns can be devastating at close range but there's a reason dangerous game (other then leopard) is hunted with big bore rifles. Soft or solid 4-500gr bullet with premium construction going 2200-2400fps is what it takes to be classed as a stopping gun

But chances are the OP will likely hunt deer or maybe blackbear so 12ga will work fine given its limitations. Find a good slug that shoots well. Challengers. Rio stars. Brennekes. All work well and will brake bone and most often exit leaving a big entry and bigger exit hole.
 
Baikal mp 153 semi auto

For those people who shot slugs with the front bead.
I have some saddle mounts with a pic rail these are made for the Baikal mp 153.
You can mount any type optics on it I have a reflex sight on one and the other has a scope on it.
You can use any scope because it has a ton of ajustment on the rail.
