Gentlemen,
These files are important as they give us a breakdown of the number of M1 Garands made by SA. The files go on to tell us about Production at Winchester of the M1 Garand Rifle. The dates on these files are IMPORTANT Because it's Feb. 14,1941.
Without input from you guys no one learns anything Try to put in some info/question and we can learn more of the M1's History.

Some files have been seen before

Ah Winchester slow to bat again, you know Clancy reading these files makes me NOT want to buy a Winchester product. :p

Anyways other then the fact they finished their "educational" order when they should have been well into production of the 200 rifles a day if I remember correctly. They have all the machine tools and equipment according to the files as of February 21 1941 to produce 200 rifles per day, and yet they didn't expect to hit that production amount till October.

Sounds to me like one of the 2 producers of the rifles is tyeing up valuable war supplies. :)

Dimitri,
You must buy Vol 1 of my Garand Papers. Think about this question. Are all the serial number per SA and Winchester out of place with the M1 NOT made on dates that are already out there ???
Thanks again
Clancy

I do believe the serial numbers are out of place, after all they issued blocks of serial numbers to SA and Winchester, so SA guns are in order based on production and Winchester guns are also in order of their production but they are not in order with each other. :)

As I understand it, Springfield Armoury techs were pissed that Winchester was getting the contract and getting paid more money for it therefore Winchester was never kept in the loop for the mods and updates. I've heard this from several people now, any comments?

Scott

Springfield Armour techs would be paid the same regardless of the cost of the rifles I believe, after all at this point in time they were a Government facility ran by the Ordnance Department. Winchester however was OVER charging for the M1 rifles by almost double for the rifles compared to the costs for Springfield's rifles.

Winchester charged from 116$ at the start of the run and never went under 39$ if my memory serves. Springfield Armoury by the end of the War was charging about 26-27$ per gun.

The difference in price was later taken back by Ordnance at the Wars end. :)

Dimitri

What's interesting about Winchester overcharging is the well known fact that (as I understand it) John Garand himself refused to sell the rights to his rifle to any commercial interest but was more concerned about the well being and safety of his (adopted) country.

Of course I may be out in left field here. I also read that he kept a skating rink... in his living room... in the winter. Skating helped him to think.

But I do believe he was the inventor of the very first automatic screw manufacturing machine, a feat that (IMHO) would be quite momentus. (But not as momentus as his rifle, of course). :p

Oh and some light trivia, there are still a few Garands in the phone book for the Montreal region (St. Remi being south of Montreal).

Not too sure thats true Automatic screw machines were around before he was born. ;)

Charles Vander Woerd, then the mechanical superintendent at American Watch Co., invented the first automatic screw machine in 1871.
