Hey folks, I've had my eye on a Mossberg 590A1 for a while. I'm leaning towards the SPX model but I'm not in favor of having a ported barrel. I'm not sure if you can get that model without a ported barrel maybe someone here can answer that. I've also recently been told that Mossberg Shotguns are great but that in Ontario where I live if anything goes wrong with my shotgun and I need to have it repaired it's next to impossible to get that done here. I find that hard to believe as Mossbergs own website has 2 places listed for repairs in Canada and both are in Ontario! That said I was hoping a few people on here that are "in the know" can tell me if what I have been told is true.

Thanks for any help

LS.

Well, if one of them is Grech,,, use the other one, Mossberg are very easy to take down and work on, I just took the magpul stock and forearm off my 500 and put it on my 590A1 mariner, friggin awesome, the magpul gear looks kind of weird but shoulders perfectly for me and feels very natural! Then I put a raptor grip on the 500, just for fun, I am installing a 14" barrel kit on a 590 I have and also another raptor grip this morning! The 590 and 590A1 are slick very fast and smooth actions, make sure you clean and oil the action and moving parts, when you get it! Enjoy!

I have the non ported barrel and the ported barrel 590 a1.identical barrel lengths, In all honesty the ported barrel version is better to shoot. Barrels in general are easy enough to swap. Or go for the 14" kit that they sell. I've never had an issue with my rifles but if I did I'm not sure I'd go through factory warranty. lots of parts out there to keep these running. The 500 is worth looking at also. It may be easier to find different barrels. You can even get the 3 barrel combo.

Can't answer your question specifically but if you have parts on hand 590a1 is dead easy to work on. Almost no need for a gunsmith for repairs.

Yes they are, does anyone know where to get trigger groups or parts, I was wondering about getting the metal trigger guard/body!?

Well, I never said obtaining parts was easy. Brownell's would be a top pick but they are perpetually out of the metal trigger group. They do have some key parts however.

Western Guns Works in Canada are right in the middle of the process of setting up parts supply for Mossberg. Going to take a bit more time but should be able to get some parts from them a little down the road.

I have a 590A1, this model:

Had it for less then a year and everything was great, until recently the safety stopped working altogether (would fire with the safety engaged). :kickInTheNuts:

Contacted Mossberg US who were great to deal with and directed me to their Canadian warranty centre, which turns out to be Grech. Needless to say after reading plenty of bad experiences about Grech I wasn't expecting it to be a good process. Well I was wrong.

They sent Canpar directly to my house (after a little negotiation) to pick up the shotty on Feb 23rd, had it for a week and according to the notes I got via email they replaced the trigger and safety. Now they have sent it back to me, scheduled to be dropped off by Canpar on March 7th.

Outside of the original safety issue, I'm fairly happy on how the process worked. :shotgun:

Safety seems to be the biggest problem with 590a1's.

Swapping out the entire trigger group & safety doesn't seem necessary but it's the easiest way to solve the problem without having to diagnose it.

Glad you got it sorted.

Cheers and I thought it was a bit of overkill myself.

Safety is buggered on one of my 590A1s too.
I had swapped it out for an oversized version and all was well for a good while after.
Then all the sudden the safety was stuck.
Had it apart and reinstalled, all parts are there but it won't cooperate.
If I remove the trigger group it works fine.
But whatever direction the safety is when I reinstall the trigger group, it stays stuck that way.
So that shotgun is always "hot".
But it has like an 11lb trigger so I can deal with that.

So you essentially come to the conclusion the oversized safety somehow caused he issue ?

I'm really not sure man.
The issue remains now when I install both the OEM and oversized safety.
It appears that the trigger group is somehow impeding the travel of the safety.
The safety moves freely up until I fully seat the trigger group.
I'd like to get ahold of a plastic trigger group from a 500 and try that.

This seems to happen with a lot of Mossbergs. You'd think by now they would at least be able to identify exactly what causes it. Something must wear just enough to cause things to get out of spec.

If it's the receiver that is a very serious problem. The rest can be addressed easily.
