Quick and Dirty M&P 9 Review

I've read that some minor surgery on the follower in the mag will let the 10th round go in easy. I haven't tried it yet myself.

Do you know if that applies to the older 5" models?

That is what I bought. A five inch 1 - 10 twist barrel for my not so old M&P Pro. It had the slower 1 - 18 barrel. All the M&P 9mm guns had 1 - 18 twist barrels. The drop in after market barrels are 1 - 16 and the new production barrels are 1 - 10 twist. The latter will stabilize the longer 147 gr bullets better and likely provide better accuracy for the 124 grainers.

Bob, can you share where you were able to source the factory m&p barrel?

No problem I ordered it through Charlton's the S&W repair centre. It took awhile. Initial shooting suggests an accuracy improvement. S&W has redesigned the exterior to f the barrel where it locks up. Beefier for sure. I think there were cases of barrels cracking in the US. Don;t quote me on that but it seems to me I read that on the M&P forum. Not a lot of them but some. In any event the barrel has certainly been strengthened.

S&W will insist the barrel be fitted by Charlton's so be aware of that. I suspect there is a liability issue if their rep does not do it.

You had to send your whole gun to Charltons? How much, if you don't me asking?

Yes. Not their fault it is a rule S&W has. I suspect S&W is worried about a liability issue. The barrel itself requires no fitting that I am aware of. I paid $112. all in if memory serves me correctly. Gina at Charlton's can give you the correct amount. Canada Post was separate.

I mailed the gun down to them and it was back in a week. The timing I would expect will vary depending on how busy they are. Mine was done just before Christmas so they were quite busy. I should say I asked about the part in June and it took that long for them to get the part out of S&W so much depends on whether they have the part in inventory. Gina did take my name and did phone me when it came in. Good folks to deal with.

I have since acquired a CZ 75 Shadowline and plan on using it in IDPA this year as well as my GP-100. I have to stay reasonably sharp with the revolver just in case I run into Jim S from Calgary. He has beat me the last three times we have met and I think he thinks my name is easy money. :>)

Once the weather warms I'll post a comparison of results using both barrels on the IDPA Canada forum.

Thanks. That cost seems reasonable. My M&P is fairly early production (MPE###x), and while reasonably accurate, the 1 in 18 twist rifling could not reliably handle some 155 gr cast reloads that I tried.

Yes worse with the 147 gr ones as well. I have one of the first FS guns with the original barrel in it. I use it mostly when I run courses now. It handles the 125 gr bullet well enough. I lent it to a friend when we ran our first Provincials and he promptly lapped the field with it so it is fair to say it is the shooter not the gun. If you have the PRO or even the FS I think the upgrade is worth while. The gun is never going to be a target pistol but you are not looking for that anyway. The guns are so reliable and light, all of which makes the gun ideal for our sport. I shoot all my pistols I own about the same. There might be a message there. I think I have hit a wall as the runners say. A comfortable wall but a wall none the less.
