Quick answer needed to 17HMR question

to be honest i think the heavy barrel is to allow more shots before a barrel is considered hot, a hot barrel may hinder accuracy if it has "warped" by the temp.

i havent bought one yet. im fine with my shooting skills.. what im asking is - in something as small as a .17HMR , is a heavy contour barrell going to make a difference that is easily noticeable to someone shooting rabbits and possums - not paper punching

ive got a marlin 917v, stainless bull barrel, non fluted.
i get about 1/2" at 100yds, i havent shot a slim barreled rifle in 17hmr though. how much is the price difference between barrel profiles?

It depends on how much shooting you plan on doing... I know my 10/22 barrel gets hot after 10-20 rounds.

I have never had my .17HMR Heavy barrel (H&R Sportster) get hot at all... even after a few hrs sitting on a gopher field.

You would be hard pressed to find a difference between the two for normal shooting. Heavy barrels excel when you are colony shooting, multiple shots. The barrel will be slower to heat up allowing more shots during a "busy" shoot. However, it works the other way too, once it warms up it takes longer to cool.
For regular hunting the regular barrel is fine.
