quick answers needed on scoping a No1 and No4

so ive got a BSA 1917 No.1 in pretty damn good condition.. it still shoots well. and i was thinking of dropping a scope on it since i dont use it for service, but dont want to just let it sit there.. since it cant be fed with Axis blood any more i figure it needs to at least be fed with deer..

going to find an older style low power optic as not to defile it with modern technology.. but i need a scope mount that isnt going to irreversably modify this old warhorse. i dont really want to drill and tap it..

also, a secondary option is to get a No.4 in lesser condition and make that my milsurp hunter/psuedo sniper ...

so my question is..

what are the best scope mounts for a No1 and a No4 that arent going to irreversably modify the rifle?
 
S&K have mounts for both rifles.

Their Number 4 mount requires ZERO modification to the rifle and is bl**dy SOLID when you get it on. Replaces the rear sight, which you put away very carefully.

Their Number 1 mount attaches to the Bridge Charger Guide at the rear. At the front, it attaches to a thin Collar which goes around the Knox-form of the barrel. You have to trim out a TINY bit of wood to get this into place but, if you put it in solid, it should not interfere with the bedding.

I have the Number 4 mount on one of my own rifles, along with a honking great Barska scope with zillions of power magnification and a little light that turns the reticle on and off. This is very helpful when I try to shoot into space at night. At other times it is of doubtful utility because I don't hunt and don't have anybody (currently) shooting at me, but who knows what the future might hold? As to the MOUNT, it is SOLID and I have had NO trouble with it. It's a hundred bucks, the Number 1 mount is about 10 more.

Friend GAIRLOCHIAN (on this forum) makes what appears to be a solid Number 4 mount which sells for about a third the price of the S&K. I do not have one myself but they are said to be very good. Contacting him by PM might be a very good way to go.

ATI has no drill scope mounts as does S&K, there are a couple of others and I believe there was a CGNer selling one too.

Others will be along to fill in the gaps.

I'll echo the S&K mount as being an excellent choice.
 
I like the Cad-Technik because it allows you to remove the scope with the top half of the mount without losing zero. The rear sight stays on, and you can raise it to get your bolt out if you take the scope off.

The price is higher than most, so it those advantages don't interest you it isn't worth the extra cost, and the other downside is that it carries the scope higher than all the others, and none of them are really low anyway. A Beartooth comb raising kit answers this on one of my rifles, a replica No.4T cheekpiece on an extra buttstock on another.
