Quick handy open sighted bolt action?

Stag arms 10

I convinced a coworker to get one in 308. He wants one centerfire rifle that will do everything. Big game hunting, cheap plinking, run and gun, bear defense. I, on the other hand, have an addiction to buying a separate gun for every purpose. Or multiple guns for every purpose. 'Cause ya never know; you might need a backup on a hunting trip or as a loaner.

Cool, I didn't know that rifle was non restricted. I am however in the market for a bolt action, not wanting to get into any pissing matches of reliability between bolt vs semi auto. I want one rifle to do it all... hunt, plink, target, zombie defense, SHTF, bugout whatever you wanna call it. I want to get very skilled with one rifle and know that if the world were to come to an end I can still count on my bolt action. That being said I do LOVE the look of the Tikka T3x Arctic but I cannot justify twice the price over a Ruger Gunsite Scout. I do want this to moose and deer hunt in northern Ontario and anyone that is familiar with that knows the weather can really suck so stainless is a plus. We deer hunt in weather that can be as cold as -20C, then we bring our rifles into a warm cabin that has been heated by a wood burning stove all day, in the 5 years I have been hunting here I have seen two rifles with walnut stocks crack due to this. I do really love the look of the CZ 557 Ranger and CZ 557 Carbine, I think they would be great heirloom quality rifles and serve my purpose very nicely. However the first time I slip on a snow covered rock and smash that walnut stock off the boulders beneith I think I would have a heart attack, plus there is the walnut splitting factor. I know that a synthetic stocked stainless rifle is likely going to be the best option for what I need but im NOT ready to go that way completely. I do really love the look of a laminate stocked rifle with stainless steel, I think it gives a bit of that heirloom factor while still offering the best of both worlds durability and weather resistant wise.

If you are still following along with me here I think I have just talked myself into a Ruger Gunsite Scout in .308, I think if I decided to go with anything but I would still have this urge within to own a GSR. I havnt been following the Ruger GSR in a few years, I know that they were originally offered in laminate stock with an 18.5" barrel with no flash supressor. Here in canada do we have the laminate version with the 18.5" barrel and flash supressor now, the one with the ability to remove the flash supressor and screw on the stainless cap?

Id like to thank everyone who offered their opinions here I have spent the last few days mauling them all over, the heart wants what the heart wants tho and I think I went into this knowing the GSR would be tough to beat. Thanks again!!!

Ruger's Gunsite Scout in either .308 or 5.56 would be a good choice. My personal favorite "Brush Gun" is CZ's 527 in 7.62x39 so I'd recommend looking at that one. We currently have all 3 of those in stock and the 527 is on sale for $849.99. Having said that, I find Savage makes excellent rifles for any budget. Iron Sight rifles from Savage are starting at right around $530 for a base model Axis.

Another plug for the scout. Get the synthetic stock and save yourself 1lbs. Much lighter then the 557 Ranger, as pictured 8lbs with 5 ers and sling.

Jungle carbine:

Short barrel
Short OAL
Detachable magazine
scope mounting via ATI no drill mount
Anything a 308 Winchester will do, a 303 British will do.
Flash hider
Bayonet mount if you're hog hunting ;-)

Not sure why this wasn't mentioned before.

I tried that route myself before I settled on the Scout. Two things that I didnt lile was crap scope mounting options/high mount and bad cheek weld and the mags are not overly user friendly.

Love my 527 in 7.62x39, but not a good choice for moose I wouldn’t think.

I'm really enjoying my CZ 557 Range. I have it set up just the way I like it. I took 2 deers on my second time out with it. By warned, CZ lists the weight at 3.3 kg, 7 1/4 lbs, they're off by an entire pound, mine weighs in at 8 1/4 lb without scope. Perfectly balanced, points very nicely and holds very well, but will be heavy for some.

Are you hunting with the 10 round magazine or did you find 5 rounders that fit?
