Quick nuisance animal question

You must be in a no-shooting area, seeing as you are asking.
Many tool rental places have box traps available.
I believe legholds are outright illegal in ON.
Groundhogs can be tough little critters to kill cleanly with a .22, but now I understand why you started your air rifle thread.

What was the movie with the golfer and the groundhog? Caddy Shack?
Maybe we have the makings for a sequel - security specialist dealing with an earth pig.

Not interested in shooting the thing, as its illegal where I live. I started the AG thread because its cheaper than a 22LR.

Anyways, I started doing what I call "groundhog patrols" with the 17 y/o yellow lab today, and the dog managed to corner it behind the barn, but then he decided to lay down and roll around, at which point the ground hog darted into his den underneath the shed.

I may end up having to fork out $700 for the trapper.
Can I claim this expense on my income tax somewhere. :p

Also- I LOLed at your humour.

You don't need a licensed trapper for a groundhog, its not a furbearer. Just get your own live trap and be done with it. If you want to kill it use a conibear or leghold it and club away.

I'd say your lucky your dog was bright enough to leave it alone. Those little buggers have a lot of fight in them and very sharp teeth.

IIRC, The MNR loaned me a live trap to deal with some otters.
this was a long time ago, don't know if they still do that.

$8, TSC store or any farm store. Light it, drop it in the hole, cover the hole, done. "Giant destroyer"

Around here they ask for a farm number... Not sure if that is the law or store policy. They ask me for a number when I bought some rat poison from them.

They work very well though when you can get them.

Another one of those things you can thank the liberal government for. A lot of items hit the "list" a year ago last Christmas when they deemed that people were not capable of fertilizing their own lawn, for their own safety of course.. Oddly, the only place the chemicals can be used is on school playgrounds and parks, go figure.
The gopher bombs should still be OK, not a chemical, just carbon monoxide and sulphur, sucks the oxygen out of the hole. Must be a store policy, still on the shelves here, for now.

Thats actually a good idea. The hardest part will be to figure out which holes they're in. (Waiting......)

Anyways, I deduced we have more than one when I saw a smaller one in the morning.
Later in the day, I then saw my 56 y/o father chasing one with a twig. I LOLed.

You can use those Live-well traps... I heard they don't float...

One time, we had a large amount of voles in the back corner of the yard... The old man was getting creative, which is a scary time... He came out with the Oxy-Acetylene torch, and plugged up as many holes as he could... He started to fill the burrow with the mixture, after a few minutes, he went to light it with a blow torch, but it didn't ignite..

We used water and chlorine pucks, and filled all the holes, after the water ran for a few hours, we drove over it with the truck, and then later the 500lb concrete yard roller..

That was a few years ago, and they still haven't come back to that spot..

Locate all the holes, stand a small stick in the dirt in front of each hole, if it stays standing the hole is not being used, if it is knocked over the direction of the stick will dictate which direction the animal went, in or out. Drop it in the hole with the stick leaning in to the hole.

My neighbor had a problem with rats burrowing under her shed and under a bamboo plant in her back yard. Poured some ammonia and chlorine bleach into the hole and covered it up. They never came back. Just be sure to light a cig or some incense so you can determine the wind direction and are't standing down wind when the two chemicals mix. It could be harmful.
