hi all!
i finally brought a friend in the gun world, and since i am going for RPAL saturday, my buddy wishes to pass it too, however he does not have the PAL so my question is : can you own. buy and shoot a pistol with ONLY RPAL or do you need the PAL first??? Sorry if the answer is out here ( sure it is ) but search left me empty handed.
 
can't do both, this time is just the RPAL, and the next PAL class is in a loooooooooooong time... so would my buddy get away with only RAPL or will he need to get PAL anyway to get only a pistol???
 
I think if you get an RPAL you should have the right to Possess and Acquire a restricted firearm... any PAL instructors to chime in? ;)
 
exactly my thought but somehow i believe it's like trucks license, you need a normal car license before you get your class1
 
I may be wrong, but I think he could challenge the tests, and get his course report. BUT a RPAL will not be issued by itself. He could do the tests for the basic PAL later, and then apply for a PAL with non-restricted and restricted classes.
 
You cannot get an RPAL without passing the PAL test as well.
It is a staged license. i.e. you need PAL to get RPAL.
You can do both at same time, I did this winter when I upgraded from POL.
You do not have to take a course.
You can just challenge exam, BUT you should be familiar and comfortable with firearms.

You can buy anything not prohibited with an RPAL.

These 2 courses teach the same $hit for the most part but there are subtle differences, and because of that the government finds a way to charge double. Logically speaking the course will allow one to procure a restricted liscense for future aquisition of a firearm in that class....but personally It is still worth taking both courses for personal satisfaction in my opinion.

No you cannot.
Call the CFC if you don't believe me.
I wasn't in this situation years ago, it was January this year.
Forced to write BOTH exams for PAL and RPAQL because I wanted to upgrade from POL to RPAL.

Seeing as RPAL lets you buy anything not prohibited , why would you ever need a PAL if you could just write the RPAL?
 
rpal and pal exams WERE ALMOST MIRROR IMAGES of each other- in my course, the rpal and the pal were taught side by side, and the exams were distributed at the same time- you'd have been FOOLISH not to do the two together

Well I would venture that you take the RPAL test before you take the PAL test...

IT would be neat to have a PAL that says yes to handguns but no to a single shot .22 rifle.

In all the meeting that I was to we were told that the PAL was to be issued first than a restricted second,now you can take them both and apply for both at the same time,and take them out of sequence but the restricted would only be issued when the non was completed and all the paper work (proof the courses were done as required on the application) was included.That's from Nova Scotia but it's still a Federal thing.
 
As an instructor I can confirm that you in fact need Non restricted before you get your restricted. Both can be obtained at the same time. As for cost I will tell you this. The government restricts the fees to cost+$50 maximum per course. The maximum you can charge students for both non res. and res. is $130 bucks. Paperwork costs $15 per classification and this INCLUDES THE MANAULS. Anyone charging extra for the manuals is a genuine a**hole and should be reported to the CFO or the CFC for such violations. There is one small exception to this rule. These costs apply ONLY to the REQUIRED MATERIAL AND INFORMATION TO SUCCESSFULLY QuALIFY FOR A PAL/RPAL. If the course includes anything EXTRA above and beyond what is legally required to be taught, then the sky is the limit for price. The pricing also applies to challenges.

I took my PAL a couple of years ago ( I just read the crap in the book )and just recently called the local examiner about taking my restricted exam. I told him that I had got a 98% result with my pal exam, and asked with that result would I have passed my restricted if I had taken it at the same time. He said " no bother ".
With my case it was due to ignorance that I did not take the restricted at the same time. Now I have to read that boring book all over again.
 
Skim through your restricted manual. Answer the chapter reveiw questions. As long as you know the answers, especially regarding legal transport and storage you will do fine.
