Hello all,

I just bought a brand new Savage 64F (.22lr) for my girlfriend's son yesterday and went shooting it this morning. I've noticed not only the slide will not stay opened at the end of magasine but even cycling the bolt back with an empty magasine in will not keep the bolt opened. Are they manufactured that way?

I know I can manually push knob-button in to keep it opened but the way things are right now we're looking at a dry fire every empty magasine and we all know what that does to the firing pin ...

Thanks for your help.

I have a 64 and that's the same manner in which mine functions, not impressed with my 64 at all. I love Savages but this model does have some issues. Also keep an eye on your magazines this model can chew them up! I believe there is a write up on here somewhere about this? Hope this helps!

I adore my 64! All of 'em..

They don't have a "bolt hold open" feature. They are a touch finicky but, pick an ammo it'll eat and, keep it clean (every 500-1000rds) you'll enjoy it for years. I bought my "main .22" about 25 years ago...still runs like a top and, still my favourite.

This design has been in continuous production for 50+ years.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back to a time when folks could count to 10...

Not mocking anyone...if it was a feature you really wanted, you could alter or, fab a follower that would hold the bolt open. Eventually something might give...the pot metal mag or, mag well would be my guess. No doubt dry-firing isn't cool...maybe put a dummy round in the mag first? No dryfire but, no bang would let you know it was empty.
