i have a remengton 700 tac 308 i have owned it seince april or may last year.. i have only fired 40ish shots out of it so far and i have heard people say and read on this forum that there is a point in the barrels life that it will hold its poa im woundering how many shots it will take for the 308?i sorta hope my qustion is clear as mud

depends on the barrel, iv owned rifles that accuracy is good from the get go, and others that take 25-30 shots before the barrel is properly fouled that it shoots at its best.

so long story short, there is no real answer other then. depends on the barrel. but id say after 40 the barrel is probably all fouled and "settled" in

im not giving up on it at all i was just woundering at what point i can stop buying factory rounds and start working up a load for the gun.. when im happy about the way it shoots i will be posting a topic in reloading when the time comes

I never bother with factory loads,I begin with starting loads, and by the time you get to fine tuning any potentially good starting loads, the barrel is going to be at it's best.

a good barrel should be good right away. On a break in routine in a high end euro sniper rifle, we were keeping the groups tiny right off the get go. I think it depends on the barrel and to be honest if it gets better with time, the instant its at its best is the instant it starts becoming worse with every additional shot.
