Quickie about rifle dies in a progressive press

Hey team, I am just trying to figure something out here...

I reload a ton of pistol stuff on my 650. I use three dies, a sizer, an expander, and a seater.

For rifles, I notice the sets often seem to come with no expander...I assume because most people aren't doing it on a progressive press.

So do I need a powder/expander die purchased seperately to run .308 on my 650? Is it just a universal die, or am I just looking and not seeing?

After continuing to poke around, I believe this is the case, can anyone confirm?

1: decapping/resizing die

2: expanding die (maybe optional?)

3: charging die

4: seating die

5: specialty crimping die i.e. factory crimp die (definitely optional.)

Thinking about it without looking at my press, maybe the charging die would have to be second all the time, not 100% sure there though.

Anyone?
 
If you mean the belling/flaring done to handgun cases, rifles don't use 'em. Chamfering the inside of the case mouth deals with it. Chamfering and deburring needs to be done after every trimming and when the case is brand new. It's a one time thing unless the case needs trimming.
 
in a couple of the RCBS dies I have, the recharging and expanding die are one in the same. the brass comes up to be expanded and the powder can be dropped thru the same die, The powder thrower screws on top of the die.

This is true. However, if you are loading cast bullets, you do need a expander die otherwise the case neck will shave the bullet. At least, this was my experience.
