Glock 17- cheap, reliable, and you can beat the piss out of it at courses, give it holster wear, dings/scratches, etc and not lose sleep over it
S&W 586- gotta have a wheelgun, and Pythons are too expensive
1911 in .45- it's just one of those guns that you need to experience. I'd get a double stack 2011 frame in 9mm myself, knowing full well that would be sacrilege.
Ruger 22/45- cheap to shoot, accurate as hell, ugly as sin
Sig P226- IMO it's THE quintessential pistol. When I think of a handgun, the P226 silhouette is what I imagine. High quality, very accurate, still affordable. Everyone and their dog should own at least one.
