Knowing what kind of fur / hair we are looking at might help. If it is fine fur, then I would say Stuckon might be right. If it is deer hair or some sort of large animal hair then I would say something dragging another, slightly rotten, animals remains down the trail.

It's a deer drag . It's back and rump were worn down to the bare hide as the cougar pulled it along by it's neck. The deer BTW was a fully mature doe of over 200 pounds. The strength of these cats never fails to impress me.


The cat killed it 100 feet from our bedroom window and pulled it 300 yards or so into the bush at the rear of our horse paddock. My daughter pushed the cat off the kill later in the day and then we pulled the deer clear of the paddock and into the bush on the far side.
 
I guess the deer must of been seriously moulting to leave that much hair behind.

Yes, our deer are looking VERY shaggy right now! LoL The winter coats are starting to shed big-time which is a good thing as they are calling for 30+ weather here by this coming weekend.
