Am asking if anyone has a r-15 or r-25 and has removed or painted over the camo paint . I want to know if it possible to dura coat over the finish ?

Thanks

why did you get the one with camo paint. I thought you could get them in black as well.
Are these not restricted? meaning you cannot hunt with them anyways?

They don't come in black and they ar restricted only. I am toying with the idea of painting mine, however I'm getting used to the camo and at least I can pick it out on the rack at matches.

I have not tried to remove it, but have been shooting an r15 as often as possible for a year now. The areas where I would expect wear -- inside of mag lip(overspray, or whatever you want to call it), and under the charging handle show little wear. Seems like a pretty durable finish to me.

I also know that nothing that I use solvent wise has any impact on it.

Painted R25

I painted my R25 after I put a PRS stock and an ergo grip on it. Don't know anything about Duracoat though, I just used krylon. I'm not really too concerned about a perfect finish, all my guns are scratched. My guns are bought to be used, not to be babied...
I tried to match the paint to the area I live in, if I end up moving, I'll just repaint it. Not really to hung up on the camo finish, but when I put the new stock and grip on, it just made sense to paint the whole gun, scope and all.

The factory camo finish appears to be pretty thick. I had to scrape it of the rails for my Arms scope rings to fit. I bet if you wanted to remove it on the entire gun, you'd have to sandblast it or something... If you're planning to duracoat it, that would probably be fine.

What he means is that ALL AR-15's are restricted in Canada, barrel length and color make no difference, meaning you can't hunt with any of them, not even the remington camo R-15's, he also meant that a black AR-15 can be had for the same price as a camo'd R-15.

I think the camo looks good the way it is though, it won't flake off like spray paint would eventually.

Probably metal safe paint stripper.

I had my Benelli M4's barrel painted with a high temp BBQ paint (very durable stuff, stood up to flux stripper and a scuff pad very well!), but just stripped it a couple nights ago since I got some cold blue to touch up the scratches.

I used some gel-paint stripper and the paint came right off, no damage to the parkerizing or anything underneath.

Im sure that if properly degreased and cleaned that the undercoat of paint will be just fine as a base coat though!

Remington real tree finish is not paint. Its a baked on decal so good luck trying to get it off lol. You may have to dura-coat it.

I'd sand or sandblast the factory finish off and then Duracoat the bare aluminum from there.

Remington's camo finish might be impervious to every paint remover available....
...until you Duracoat it and then it ALL flakes off.

If you have them, instead of trying and maybe ruining them, perhaps sell them (to me, really cheaply) and replace with the black equivalent.

... i was wondering the same question too...
after all, not everyone is a hunter...

Can't hunt in Canuckistan with them yet. But if you do ever need to feed your family if things get that bad, I doubt the absence of "non" on a piece of paper is going to prevent you from feeding your kids.

Exactly, they are easy to pick out, they are great guns and no two are exactly alike. BUT they do come in black, as I explain at the end of my post.

I would think it's a bake on type finish.

My guess is it would be hard to remove.

It would be a pain, but it can be removed in the same fashion I would guess as any MATTE finish on an AR. It can be scratched. But I do like the factory finishes on both of them.

The Camo does look good. Where is the petition again to de-restrict the AR's?

I don't notice the finish while I'm making holes with either one.

True enough.

I just can't understand why someone would buy the R-15 or R-25 if they didn't like the camo and wanted to change it. I would have bought the bushmaster equivalent of the R-15 because that IS what it is or the DPMS LR-308 equivalent of the R-25 because that IS what it is. I like the camo on my R-25 and R-15. That being said, I did have to look at a couple R-25's as the first couple I didn't like the camo, it was too white, mine is more greenish. I look very much forward to hunting with both of them, and I will be, when I take a trip to a country that still has some idea of freedom.

If you sandblast the rifle, you'll also be removing the anodization that Remington/Bushmaster applied before the camo coating.

mine is showing some wear, finish is very hard, but it does scratch. I'm going to paint mine someday, just paint over the existing finish.

Oh and if I dont like the camo finish why did I buy it that way? $1300 delivered for a 18" barrel mid lenght gas, 6 pos butt, the price was right :)

Both rifles are REALLY good deals. Both shoot great and I'm kinda fond of the camo. Looks like a hunting rifle.( Note Prestwiches post, regarding de- restricting our AR's for hunting perhaps?):D

try laquer thinner first. as a last resort use oven cleaner. the cleaner will take off everything including the anodization.

at least you'll be at bare aluminum without wearing the metal.
