I have a question about my Mauser k98, made in 1937 with matching receiver and barrel, it's an R/C. I bought this rifle for 1000$ the other day I know it's expensive but there drying up and I just want to get my hands on one. Anyway the shellac is peeling a bit off it and I was wanting to refinish it and make it look "authentic" to how the Germans had it. I was wondering how I could refinish it properly and the materials I need or if I should refinish it at all.

RCs are in their own collectable class. RC k98s.

I'd get a repro stock for shooting and dicking around the bush and kept the original in case you want to sell it later.

My 2 cents,,, the Germans made it and the Russians captured it.

It was (rebuilt, re-armoured) by the Russians to there specifications.

Leave the GermRuss (Deutschruss) as is (a little TLC every now and then) and enjoy it!

Yep, thats my 2cents, others may differ.

I thought about refinishing my RC K98 and I am glad I didn't I have learned to enjoy it for what it is and the distinct character it has. Another plus is you can shoot them a lot without worrying about breaking a matching part. One day down the road I may buy a nice authentic German one for a couple grand.

This if you want to clean it up, tuck the peeling shellac RC stock away. If you ever decide to sell it you can put it back in it’s captured refurbished state, they have their own historical aspect as they came from Russia. I had thought about re doing a peeling svt40 stock not long after I bought it, I’m glad I left it as is. It’s worth more with flaming shellac than if I stripped and refinished it, it’s only as it came from the arsenal once.
