hello,i just bought a remington r5 mil spec .308.i was just wondering what kind of3 shot groups i could get with it.i just put a leupold3x9x40 vx1 on it.my buddy said that i would get the best results with imr 4895 and 168 grain bullets.could i get good groups with 180 grain bullets? thanks dave.

Remington 5R

I have one as well. It seems to like 175 smk at longer distances. At 100, both 168 smk and 175 sml are about the same. On average I am getting <1/4 to 3/4" groups. I found that FGM for factory loads shot the best. You will also have to ty handloading to see what works best for your rifle. Have fun with it and good luck.

all the reading i have done indicates the 175grain sierra bullets will group the best. for commercial ammo, your best bet is federal match 175gr(which uses sierras). 168gr shoots nicely as well. I have heard of 1/4" groups at 100, but who knows. best i have done for 3 shot is 3/4" at 100, but im really new to scoped shooting.

I also did this

The card was 1.5x2.0625 inches. at 100 yards. The top right edge shot was a stray from a different card.
And yes, i was aiming at the diamonds.
5r is a great rifle, i need another heh.

I am on my 2nd 5R, I was not happy with the first one, and did not do anything to it and sold it, it would shoot just over MOA no matter with what load I fed it. I got a deal on a second one and this one came to life. It will shoot better than I can with 43.5 gr of Varget, CCI br primers, lapua cases, and 175 gr SMK, with an OAL of 2.810. It likes the jump into he lands.

I do not know what went wrong with the first gun, but Remington but my New 5R together right. No need to fiddle with anything on this rig.

Glad to hear you gave it another try.

I was fairly baffled by your results with the first one. So far my experiences with a number of 5R rifles have all been fantastic.

pretty familiar story with factory guns.... some good, some bad, some in between.

The bad ones with this model seem to be extremely rare.

I've seen full custom rifles that didn't live up to expectations as well. Seems no rifle is immune to this even when you lay down the big bucks.

5 r

I have owned mine for 3 years now and have done a lot of load development with it ,( 1100 down the tube ) I also had the oppurtunity to try it a long distance a Volks Range and it faired well.
I had good results with Varget and the 175 smk's , Then i bought a pound of Vitavorie N-150 and it worked the best with this powder ,
175 smk's , 41.5 gr n-150 laupa brass fed 210 m primers , .500 " at 100 yards with this load was consistant ,
Its currently being customised by McPhee in Kamloops , new barrel / jewel trigger etc
The 5R does pretty good for a Factory rifle.

I know what you are saying... Although I have a Sako TRG22 that outshoots a custom rifle I have and the custom cost much more. It is by far my favourite rifle to shoot.

You want to stay fairly close to 2.80 OAL with the 5R.

Really? Mine didn't start performing untill I pushed the bullets out to the lands at 2.935"

Currently working up a new load with Berger 168 BTHP match bullets. 10 shot group was MOA at 600 yards just last weekend. I'm hoping some more tweaking will reduce that.

I LOVE THIS RIFLE! It still shoots better than I can.

Groups depend on how far your shooting...I can make 1 hole with 3 shots the size of a golf ball at 200 yards with 168 match bthp

That's odd. Most of them are very close to 2.80. It's one of the reasons these rifles are well known for being able to shoot so well with off the shelf match factory ammo. Or at least that's what I thought.

168 Federal Match 5 rounds 100 yards very light wind. Also shot in a very dry climate.

Lets just say I have no interest in a custom .308 now. ;)

Shoots sub .5 moa at 200 yards (less than an inch) as well.

I shoot groups of 5, but that being said if the rifle will put 3 in the same hole consistently it'll put 5 in as well. Fliers are generally the conditions, the ammo and or the shooter, not the rifle. That 4th shot flier is generally what happens when you've shot 3 and then look at the target :p
