i was at the range the other day, put about 120 rounds through my 30-06 r700 sps. ive been using 180 gr federal premium and remington core loc ammo. to me they both shoot the same with the same level of accuracy. without a rear bag and using an old ammo box as one i was able to post about a 1.25-1.5 inch group at 200 yards. so in moa talk i think thats roughly 3/4 moa at 200y. anyways, i was talking to the fella who works at the range and we got to talking about bullet weight etc, because i had some 150 gr privi ammo i bought to try a while back and hadnt tried it yet. he said with the factory twist rate of my barrel id likely shoot better groups with a 168 gr bullet. i didnt have any to try out and didnt have time to go buy some and try it. im not sure what my twist rate is, its whatever the folks at remington put in there. also he was suggesting the privi ammo. ive only ever seen it sold there but he talked highly of it, said it shoots alot more accurately through this rifle in .308 than any other factory loaded ammo did. ill try a box of it next time im out there. just thought id ask some opinions from those who have done it

If you can get 1.25 inch groups ( 5 shots?) at 200 with a factory barrel, factory ammo and the rest set up you describe, then your rifle is very, very good.

The 150s and 168s will have to be tried to know for sure. I have found that sometimes stuff works out and sometimes it does'nt.

it was a 3 shot group. i had put alot of ammo through the rifle yesterday and the barrel was getting pretty hot and my shoulder was taking a beating. put right about 120 shots through it in about 3 hours and that was plenty for me.

does anyone have any experience with the privi ammo before i go and buy some of it?

In a factory barrel, twist rate won't make any meaningful difference in accuracy as a function of bullet weight. Some bullets will shoot well, some will shoot poorly, and you'll likely find not a lot of rhyme or reason to it. Your rifle (which as a factory .30-06 will have a twist rate of 1 turn in 10 inches) may well shoot the Prvi 150s poorly; then again it might shoot them as well as any other bullet.

thanks for the help, makes sense, ill have to play with different weights and see what works. so far the core loc remy stuff shoots fine, the federal premium is just about as good. at 100 im able to put one round into the other and make some fairly large holes most of the time. i may try some of the privi 150gr stuff again and see how it lands at 100 and adjust from there.
